Incredible footage shows the moment humpback whales surface in front of a tourist lodge
The Great Bear Lodge, located at Port Hardy, British Columbia in Canada, looks like a great place to get away. It's isolated from the rat race of big cities, with the opportunity to go on wildlife viewing excursions in the rainforest, spotting grizzly bears, and eating some gourmet cuisine.
There's a significant concentration of coastal grizzly bears in the area, but there were also some unlikely visitors to the lodge this month. Even those taking a vacation to this area weren't expecting to see a humpback whale up close. Not only were they lucky enough to spot one, but there were an entire group of them, swimming right up to the lodge for them all to see.
"Imagine our surprise when two humpback whales joined us for breakfast this morning!" the Great Bear Lodge wrote on their YouTube post of the magical event.
In the video below, you can see them all reacting to the sight, well, exactly as we would - with complete joy:
If you're wondering why exactly this is happening, there may have been some answers found on a Reddit thread discussing this moment. One amateur cetologist wrote:
"I've seen enough nature shows to know what the humpbacks are doing.
"They've chased a school of fish into that cove. They get it nice and concentrated, then blow bubbles around the school, like a makeshift net.
"Then several humpbacks dive below and surge to the surface all at once, mouths open, eating gigantic amounts of fish. It's a typical hunting technique that humpbacks use."
If true, it makes the event even more magical. Don't you wish you were there to see it in person?
