Dogs truly are man's best pal. From the time when humans were still scratching crude paintings on the walls of the caves we dwelt in, these furry friends have been our constant companions. It's n0t difficult to understand why that is either: the dog is one of the most socially intelligent and loyal creatures around, and your average canine is totally and wholly devoted to their master and family. They're pack animals that don't like to be alone, and indeed a solitary dog is more likely to have become depressed or vicious as a result of the mental strain isolation takes on their psyche.

Which is why when a video of a dog in an animal shelter circulated on social media, the internet's collective heart melted at the sight of the poor pooch crying because it had been abandoned. You can check out the tearjerking footage below but be warned: it's not for people who cry easily.

The video stemmed from the Saving Carson Shelter Dogs' Facebook page. In it, an adorable pit bull and Labrador retriever crossbreed named AJ can be seen lying on a bed looking depressed, crying and shivering while one of the shelter's workers tried to soothe him. Apparently, AJ was given up after his owner couldn't afford to care for him. When the video was uploaded, the comments were immediately inundated with posts from people who had had their heartstrings tugged by AJ's plight.

The video was captioned: "Sweet AJ is beautiful, he has amazing energy and he was surrendered with his beautiful brother Toby. They did great walking on a leash next to each other when they came in but now they are confused and alone and missing each other and home. They need help. AJ is 100 per cent pure sweet, gentle, loving beauty, he loves other dogs and he is missing his brother, He is shutting down, he has a cold and he needs your help..."

However, thankfully it seems that the story has a happy ending after all. Thanks to the overwhelming response to the video, poor AJ and his brother Toby were adopted by another family not long after that.

In a follow-up post the shelter later wrote: "This beauty touched the hearts of a lot of people and today he was lucky enough to take his freedom walk out of the shelter, even while he is struggling with a cold. He was rescued, and we are hoping tomorrow that rescue will work with the different rescue that is saving his bonded brother Toby, so they can be reunited. Both have been seriously depressed since they were separated...Happy life sweet AJ."

Thank god. I'm glad that we can all rest easy knowing that AJ has been re-housed. *sniff* Oh, what? Don't mind me, I think I've just got something in my eye. Is someone chopping onions in here?
