This is the tropical island filled with puppies anyone can visit
If you're an ardent canine-lover, then having your own dog is great. That is, until you start planning a vacation. Then you realise that the pesky pooch who chews your newspapers and humps your slippers is actually a bit inconvenient. Sure you can order a "pawsport" (this is what they're actually called) and get him a seat on the plane (I admit, my knowledge bank is drying up at this point), but it's a bit of an imposition.
So how can one combine the love of vacationing and adorable mutts without the fuss? Well, it turns out that somewhere out there is a beautiful tropical island, a place of sun-kissed white beaches, piña coladas and most importantly: island puppies. Lots and lots of island puppies. It's true! I'm serious! And the best part is that these little guys are all up for adoption and looking for someone to give them a loving home.
Based in the-far flung Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean sea, to the southeast of the Bahamas, Potcake Place is a shelter for homeless dogs and island puppies in a seaside paradise. Here, the little dogs are free to frisk about to their hearts' content, while they await adoption. These cute canines have been rescued from the streets by volunteer staff since 2005.
The type of rescued dogs are known on the island as "potcakes", named after the dinner that the islanders give the puppies: namely pots of mashed peas and rice. A typical potcake dog is usually a mix of a labrador, German shepherd and English fox terrier. They’re known for having an easygoing nature and for being unbelievably adorable.
They certainly enjoy the fine weather! Many of these dogs have already made a splash on Instagram, where the shelter regularly updates its followers about which dogs have been rescued (if you can call it that) and how they're faring.
As the shelter's official homepage states: "Our mission is To reduce the number of homeless potcakes on the island. Our headquarters are located in Saltmills Plaza in the Grace Bay area of Providenciales. Pop in, meet some puppies and learn some more about what we do."
It adds: "We have a constant stream of puppies needing socialisation and adoption. You can come by and take a puppy out to the beach - we'll give you everything you need, you just need to supply some TLC. We are a Non-Profit organisation run solely by volunteers. We could not operate without the kind donations of both time and money provided by our sponsors and volunteers. Please continue to support our efforts how ever you can."
Potcake Place normally houses approximately 50 to 70 puppies and all of them are up for adoption. If you'd like to donate some much-needed cash to this sanctuary then please visit this page. Who knows? Maybe one of these little guys could be yours one day!
