Kit Harrington and Rose Leslie are now engaged

There have been dozens of tragedies in Game of Thrones by this point, and many of them have been romantic relationships that ended in the most heartbreaking of ways. But perhaps the hardest to watch was the end of the relationship between Ygritte and Jon Snow, an unlikely pair who bridged the gap between those south and north of the wall.

After a particularly steamy hot spring love scene in a cave, the two formed a bond and became the couple to root for in the show. As is the way with this show, things didn't end up so well. After getting past the wall with his wildling companions, Jon was forced to flee back to his comrades at the night's watch, abandoning her. Next time they met he was forced to see her shot by an arrow and killed, by a little boy no less (remember Olly? He was the worst).

For those of us who wanted to see the two stay together, we found some gratification in the fact that their real-life counterparts got together. Kit Harington and Rose Leslie became a couple back in 2012, and it's always been good to see them walk down the red carpet.

There was some speculation about a possible engagement over the summer but the couple denied all rumours. However, it now appears that Kit has proposed to her after five years of being together. They have reportedly told their friends and families the news, with one source quoted in The Sun:

"They're yet to set a date, but told friends and family last week that they've got engaged.

"Kit's known for ages he's wanted to marry Rose but he wanted them to get a house and settle down a bit first.

"After moving in together in January he felt it was the right time to take the next step."

After living with Rose for six months, Kit spoke to James Corden about the move. "I said to her, cause she's moved into my house, 'Look darling, it's important that this is our space. That it feels like our space'", he remembered, "'Move anything you want around, change anything, chuck anything out.'"

They met while filming in Iceland for the scenes beyond the wall in season two of the hit show. Talking to Vogue Italia, Harington explained how they fell in love, and why filming in Iceland for season 2 was his favourite memory from the show:

"Because the country is beautiful, because the Northern Lights are magical, and because it was there that I fell in love.

"If you’re already attracted to someone, and then they play your love interest in the show, it’s becomes very easy to fall in love."

Rose was also apparently one of the few people in the world to know for sure that Jon Snow's death in the season five finale wasn't as clear-cut as it looked at first glance. One of the perks of dating a Game of Thrones stars it seems.
