A lot of people in the world want to be rich and famous at some point in their lives. Even as we fantasise about making it big, it would be an extremely weird experience to become a bona fide celebrity. And it would be even stranger to make it to the same level alongside a friend or two.

Whether they make it in the same industry or at the same time, there are a surprising amount of big stars out there that have known each other for years, sometimes even growing up together...

1. Jay-Z and Busta Rhymes

Busta once reminisced about having a rap battle with Jay-Z in the cafeteria at high school. "He was so ill and his arsenal was so long," he told MTV. "That was probably the first time I lost a battle that mattered". Another person who attended Brooklyn's George Westinghouse High School was Christopher Wallace Jr. aka The Notorious B.I.G.

2. John Krasinski and B.J. Novak

The Office co-stars knew each other as young'uns, even playing Little League together at Newton South High School in Massachusetts. "There's a large oak tree in the Newton Centre park playground that is legendary because only a few humans have hit it with a baseball from home plate, and B.J. Novak is among them. And I was there that day," Krasinski told The Boston Globe.

3. Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts

Both the Australian actresses attended North Sydney Girls' High School in Sydney. "Naomi Watts and I are very, very good friends and have maintained that through so many things," Kidman told the Telegraph. "I think that's really rare, particularly for actresses, and I take a lot of pride in that."

4. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez

These two met as seven-year-old stars on the set of Barney & Friends, and both became Disney stars that have ventured out into the world of music.

5. Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling

Timberlake and Gosling were castmates on The Mickey Mouse Club when they were children. At one point Ryan's mother was working in Canada while he was offered the role in Florida, so Justin's mother volunteered to be a temporary legal guardian, making them brothers for a short while.

6. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire

Despite the fact DiCaprio is more of a star now, it was Tobey that he was desperate to be friends with when they met at acting auditions. Living next door to each other at 12, they became good friends, with Leo eventually becoming godfather to Tobey's daughter.

7. Jeremy Piven and John Cusack

Growing up together in Evanston, both Piven and Cusack attended a theater workshop run by Piven's parents. Years later, they shared an apartment together in Chicago. These days, they apparently do not get along at all.

8. Justin Long and Jonah Hill

The comedians were roommates at the New School, but had a mini break from each other due to arguments before getting back together as actors. "We started getting into little fights," Long told Us Weekly. "He left the bathroom door open, didn't clean up. Little things like that".

9. Adele and Jessie J

In her autobiography Jessie J recalled jamming with Adele when they were both students at The Brit School. "We were in the same year," she wrote. "We used to hang out at lunchtimes and have a little jam. We'd sing songs we'd written or perform whatever we were working on".

10. Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve

This friendship began when they were roommates at Julliard. Before becoming famous, they promised that whoever made it would take care of the less fortunate one. After Reeve's tragic accident, in which he was paralysed, Williams offered to cover any medical costs that he couldn't.

11. Rob Lowe, Charlie Sheen, Robert Downey Jr. and Sean Penn

All four of the above have known each other since they were teens, being part of the same friendship group at high school before going on to have successful careers in acting.

12. Snoop Dogg and Cameron Diaz

Diaz recalled knowing Snoop at Long Beach Polytechnic High School as "very tall and skinny" with "a lot of pony tails". When asked about knowing her, the rapper said: "I might have sold her some of that white girl weed, you know... sticks and stems".

So, next time you and your mates are talking about your dreams for the future - know that while it's a long shot, some people have made it big alongside each other, staying mates all the way.
