Angelina Jolie opens up on the heartbreaking events that ruined her marriage to Brad Pitt

Ah, can you remember the golden age of Brangelina? Past Mr and Mrs Smith, the set on which two of the most beautiful faces in Hollywood fell madly in love, past the kerfuffle involving Brad Pitt's former wife, Jennifer Aniston, and even past the fallout, which was so well documented in the press. Yes, there was a period, 12 years to be exact, where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie seemed to be the veritable dream couple. With their six children, high-flying Hollywood careers and clear devotion to each other, they were the paradigm of love to many.

However, as we all know, it ultimately fell apart. And now, for the first time since their very public split in September of last year, Angelina Jolie has spoken out about what exactly went wrong, and sadly it has a lot to do with the actress's cancer scares.

Jolie inspired countless women with her bravery when she endured a double mastectomy and had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed at 39 to reduce her risk of contracting cancer. Her outspoken commitment to the fact that women aren't any less "feminine" as a result of undergoing such surgeries was truly a testament to her strength and compelled many women to re-assess their health and consider what preventative measures they could take.

However, it appears that the Changeling actress was struggling in more than one regard, Jolie recently opened up about the toll that these cancer scares took on her relationship.

Speaking on Awards Chatter, the Hollywood Reporter's podcast, she said:

"Over the span of that decade, I did lose my mother. I did have my mastectomy, and I did then have an ovarian cancer scare and had that surgery as well, and other things of course that happened in life that you go through."

And in an attempt to save her marriage, which had started to fall apart, Jolie chose to work with Brad Pitt on 2015's By The Sea. She continued, "We had met working together and we worked together well…I wanted us to do some serious work together…I thought it would be a good way for us to communicate". However, while the film did have a reasonably positive impact on their relationship, it didn't sustain it for too long as the couple separated the following year.

Jolie added:

"In some ways it was, and in some ways we learned some things. But there was a heaviness probably during that situation that carried on and it wasn’t because of the film.

"A piece of art can be something that’s healing or something that’s difficult. I don’t know. I’m glad we did that film because we did explore something together. Whatever it was maybe it didn’t solve certain things, but we did communicate something that needed to be communicated to each other."

Well, it certainly seems as if Jolie and Pitt's marriage was troubled for some time. And while we'd all love it if the two managed to patch it up, sometimes a relationship just runs its course, and there's absolutely nothing that anyone can do about it.
