Bella Thorne accuses Perez Hilton of slut-shaming her

Another day, another clapback. Have you heard of Bella Thorne? Me neither. Apparently she has millions of followers. Regrettably, I do know about Perez Hilton, just because he's been around for so many years and because I thought for like ten years that he was just a misspelling of Paris Hilton.

Anyway, Perez posted an Instagram picture of Bella Thorne, who reportedly is his friend, and he had a fill-in-the-blank caption that was perceived as demeaning. The photo features Thorne waving as her shirt rides-up on her chest.

The ambiguous caption led plenty of people on social media to believe that Hilton was tying to slut-shame or body-shame or x-shame Thorne for wearing a revealing outfit. Again, another day, another million people riding into the fields of online squabble to defend famous millionaires who they secretly want to become. It's like a poor person who defends rich people because secretly they think they'll be rich some day. Spoiler: probably not.

Here, Hilton set the pace for his reaction to this whole situation:

Hilton and Thorne had a whiny argument on Twitter, with Perez claiming innocence and Thorne accusing him of being a slut-shamer. Thorne played the victim, Perez played dumb.

Here, Hilton says he would do it again if he had the chance.

Now, it's possible to believe two things at once. It's possible to agree that Perez Hilton is sleazy but also that Bella Thorne is a professional marketer and is likely pretty immature. They're both two sides of the churning spiral of online outrage, designed to build up a brand. Perez wants controversy if it means clicks. Bella Thorne is not exactly a victim. If anything she's among the top 0.01% most privileged people on the planet.

So what if Hilton puts up a photo of an outfit she wore? This is what he does. Celebrity near-nip-slips are the only reason this man breathes. I can't claim to read Hilton's mind or his subconscious, so I don't know if his intent was negative. The point is that everyone loses except for Bella Thorne and Perez Hilton. Perez gets headlines, Thorne gets headlines. The cycle repeats. I, as the third active observer, am willingly a part of this decadence. But awareness of that fact doesn't absolve me of my hand in it.

I mean, look at this Tweet. Bella Thorne is 19 freaking years old. Why should a 19 year old be ultra-famous, ultra-sexualized, and not have it all go to her head? It's impossible. She's pretty much still a child.

So that's my take on this. Thorne is a child and Perez is a sleaze. The whole thing reeks of Los Angeles celebrity culture, right down to the egotistic pits that both these people occupy. If anything, Perez Hilton picked a goofy and creepy career, and Bella Thorne would be a much happier person without social media. I don't think those are controversial conclusions in the slightest.
