The world of celebrity friendships certainly is fickle, I mean, just take a look at Taylor Swift's infamous "squad". Certainly, her revolving coterie of BFF's may ebb and flow, but one thing remains as constant as their washboard abs and perfectly blown-out hair - and it is, of course, their eventual dismissal. Yes, the pop-star is notoriously selective about who she befriends - counting the likes of Gigi Hadid, Jaime King, Karlie Kloss and Lena Dunham as some of her nearest and dearest. She has, however, recently welcomed a new recruit: rising star, Camila Cabello.

The 21-year-old rose to fame as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, which formed in 2012 during the second season of the X Factor. She left the band to embark on a solo career in December of 2016, and her eponymous debut studio album went on to take the number one spot on the US Billboard 200. It was evidently the correct decision to make, but ever since she chose to leave Fifth Harmony, there have been rumours that she was prompted to do so by Taylor Swift.

Speaking to The Sun, Cabello shut down speculation that Taylor Swift had anything to do with her decision to leave the popular girl group: "She never had anything to do with that," the Havana singer asserted.

Revealing that she's "really protective" over her friends, the 21-year-old continued, "It annoyed me that people said she was encouraging me because I know that she probably got a lot of flak for that, or a lot of negative criticism".

"Nobody could ever persuade me to do anything," she added. "If I don’t want to do something the whole world could be telling me and I won’t do it. And if I do then the whole world could be telling me to not do it and I’ll do it. I’ve always been that way."

She then opened up about her friendship with the 1989 singer, saying that it was rather ironic that people thought that she had anything to do with the split because, "when Taylor and I talk and whenever we hang out we talk about love and boys."

"Our friendship is so... innocent in that way, and it's so pure," she continued.

She does, however, understand why people keep asking about her affiliation with Swift. "She's the biggest in the world," Cabello stated. "So I get that it's interesting to people, but I don't really care. To me, she's just my friend".

The pop singer also spoke about her relationship with her ex-bandmates - something which has been the subject of much media speculation. "I just feel like nothing good comes out of me talking about it. I’ve never felt so happy in my life and I just don’t have room or desire to have any bad feelings with people," Cabello asserted.

"The reason I don’t like talking about it is because I don’t want to fight, I don’t want any bad feelings. I genuinely wish them the best and I just have love for them and the whole journey we went through. I feel like now that it’s been a year and a half I totally respect the time and the memories we had. I don’t want to disrespect it."

While it's evident that Camila Cabello and Taylor Swift are great friends, it wouldn't be surprising to hear that Taylor Swift gave her contemporary some advice. I mean, she is one of the most successful pop-stars of our generation, after all. Who wouldn't welcome some titbits of wisdom?
