Cardi B and Nicki Minaj are the two biggest female rappers, and they are not BFF's. On Nicki's new album, Queen, she appears to take several shots at Cardi. For example, Cardi used to be a stripper, and Nicki rapped, "I ain't never played a ho position / I ain't never had to strip to get the pole position." Also, Cardi's songs credit other writers, and Nicki rapped, "Unlike a lot of these hoes whether wack or lit / At least I can say I wrote every rap I spit."
At the MTV Video Music Awards, Cardi got revenge by throwing shade at Nicki. First, she described herself as an "empress," which outranks queen (I think?). Then, during her acceptance speech, she said, "All of the love that fans, my friends, everybody shows me is genuine and beautiful and that’s something that God gave me that you can’t buy, bitch!" (After Queen hit number two on the Billboard charts, Nicki complained about other artists using shady tactics to inflate sales.)
Over the weekend, the femcees attended New York Fashion Week and finally fought it out - sort of. At Harper's Bazaar ICONS party, Cardi "aggressively approached" Nicki's table to talk about "the lies she was spreading." Supposedly Nicki questioned Cardi's fitness as a mother. Anyway, the argument escalated and Cardi lunged at Nicki, only to be thwarted by security. During the altercation, she chucked her shoe, but missed her target.
Apparently Nicki took shoe-dodging classes from George W. Bush.
In the end, Cardi was escorted from the party barefoot, with a ripped dress and nasty lump on her forehead. Reportedly, she got elbowed by her own security guard. As you might expect, the I Like It rapper did not like this, and wrote a furious message to You-Know-Who on Instagram.
"I've let a lot of sh*t slide! I let you sneak diss me, I let you lie on me, I let you attempt to stop my bags, f**k up the way I eat... But when you mention my child, you choose to like comments about me as a mother, make comments about my abilities to take care of my daughter is when all bets are f**kin off!!"
Some Twitter users criticized Cardi for her "classless" behavior at such a prestigious event. For fashion designers, clothing is art, and they work all year creating extravagant outfits to be represented by celebrities. We know from Bodak Yellow that Cardi makes "bloody moves," but did she burn some bridges with this incident?
Well, it turns out high-end designers still want to work with Cardi. After all that drama, Tom Ford announced their latest collaboration with the superstar rapper. I assume it's a shade of lipstick that will stay on all night, even during ratchet fights where you throw your shoes at rival MC's.
The lipstick sold out in under six hours, prompting Cardi B to gloat with a smug screenshot: "Sorry. :/..."
So, it looks like Cardi's not cancelled. She's just getting started. And if you don't like it, watch out for flying shoes.
