Nowadays, we're hard-pressed to find celebrities who are as celebrated for their fame as they are for their off-stage endeavours. Certainly, Kylie Jenner is primarily known for her lip implants and Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber for their on-again-off-again relationship. Demi Lovato, on the other hand, has closely aligned herself with the body positivity and mental health awareness movements after becoming increasingly outspoken about her own personal struggles in these regards.

Just last month, Demi dramatically stopped a concert to give an empowering speech about living with mental health issues, and she also announced that she was celebrating her sixth year of sobriety.

As Demi performed at New York's Barclays Centre on the 15th of March, she revealed that the date was a special one for her. "I know that there are people here tonight that need to ask for help," the erstwhile Disney star revealed.

"Yesterday, six years ago, I was drinking vodka out of a Sprite bottle at 9 in the morning, throwing up in the car. And I just remember thinking, 'This is no longer cute. This is no longer fun. And I’m just like my dad.' So I took a look at my life and I said, ‘Something has to change, I’ve got to get sober’ — so I did. I made changes in my life, and the reason I became so open about my story is because I know that there are people here tonight that need to ask for help, and I want you to know that that’s okay.

"Mental health is something that we all need to talk about, and we need to take the stigma away from it. So let’s raise the awareness. Let’s let everybody know it’s okay to have a mental illness, it’s okay to have an addiction problem. I’m bipolar — like, whatever! I take care of myself. And I can never say ‘Thank you’ enough to you guys for the support that you’ve given me over the years, and you’ve forgiven me for my mistakes. Thank you for being a part of saving my life. I love you guys."

So when Demi's followers started speculating that she was drinking alcohol at a recent Disney reunion, the star was understandably vexed.

Rumours started to swirl after she was photographed alongside Cole Sprouse, Matthew Scott Montgomery, Debby Ryan and Alyson Stone to ring in Hayley Kiyoko's latest album. In the image which was shared by Haley, Demi is seen holding a beverage.

I mean, no big deal right? People are capable of drinking fluids that aren't alcohol - but some fans thought that it was odd considering that in the same image that was later uploaded by Matthew Scott Montgomery, the beverage seemed to have been erased.

While Demi shouldn't have to defend her sobriety, especially since she's been so candid about it in the past, she did respond to an accusatory comment left by a fan on Instagram, writing "I don't have to defend anything but it was red bull."

I mean, c'mon guys.
