Ellen Degeneres was brought to tears by this birthday gift from her wife Portia de Rossi
Ellen Degeneres turned 60, but you don't have to worry about getting about her a gift. Celebrities have been stopping by her show all week to surprise her with presents. Chance The Rapper gave her flowers, Justin Timberlake sang "Happy Birthday" on a video call, Dax Shepard gave her a sexy serenade and former First Lady Michelle Obama gave her CVS goodies. But the best present came from Ellen's wife, Portia de Rossi.
During Thursday's show, the Arrested Development actress made a surprise appearance. After joking about her scratchy voice ("This is your birthday gift, a sexy voice."), she delivered a heartfelt speech:
“It’s your 60th birthday, and this gift had to be really special, and it had to represent who you are and what you really care about. Not just now, but what you’ve always cared about. What you were influenced by and what has made you the amazing person that you are today. So, I combined that and questions when we first met like who’s your idol, and what would you do if you weren’t a talk show host?...for like the last two years, Ellen has said to me, ‘I feel like I’m not doing enough.’ Every day, almost. So, I put all that together, and I got you this gift.”
Portia then played a video message, in which we learn about one of Ellen's heroes: Dian Fossey, a primatologist and conservationist who studied gorillas in Africa. (You've probably heard of her book, Gorillas In The Mist.) Diane dedicated her life to animals, and founded a the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda to observe and protect mountain gorillas. Sadly, Dian was murdered in her cabin, but her work continues through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. Today there are 880 mountain gorillas left alive.
"So, for your birthday, Ellen, I am bringing you and your hero Dian together by building the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund,” said Portia in the voiceover to the video. “Ellen, you will carry on Dian’s legacy by giving them a permanent home in Rwanda. Now you will join Dian as a protector and champion of these amazing animals, the mountain gorillas. Happy birthday."
Pretty awesome gift, right? It can be tough to come up with the perfect present with your spouse, but Portia nailed it. After the announcement, Ellen broke into tears, just like you probably just did. "It’s the best gift," said Ellen. "When we got married, Portia’s line was, ‘It’s good to be loved. It’s profound to be understood.’ And she understands me, because that is the best gift that anybody could have given me."
Sorry, Michelle Obama, Chance The Rapper, Dax Shepard and Justin Timberlake. Portia de Rossi put you all to shame.
