Emilia Clarke reveals the huge social faux pas she made when she met Prince William
Meeting somebody famous is always a bit strange, isn't it? For whatever reason, it's always slightly disappointing. Whether it's the fact that they're incredibly normal or that they're actually a complete a**hole, celebrities rarely live up to the billing. Then, add in the fact that you are a complete bag of nerves when it comes to meeting that person, and you have a recipe for an awkward and fumbling encounter.
However, if you were a famous person, you would think that meeting another A-lister would be pretty easy, right? Well, kind of.
Emilia Clarke is someone who should be used to mingling with the most famous people on the planet. The actress, who plays Daenerys Targaryen in the hit series Game Of Thrones, has risen to international fame due to her breakthrough role and is one of the highest paid actresses on the planet. However, for all the fame, recognition and adulation, Emilia still struggles when it comes to meeting other famous people.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Emilia opened up about the time that she was due to meet with the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William. Talking about the build-up that proceeded the prince entering the room, Clarke explained that "it is a frightening thing going to the palace. There’s a whole… there’s a thing.
"When you’re there, I was just relaxing and they [said], 'Prince William is coming,' so I was like, 'Oh cool, great.' I’m really relaxed and everything is going to be fine."
However, while Emilia felt calm and ready to meet the Prince, she quickly became a bag of nerves when she learned about the protocol that one must abide by when in the presence of a Royal. "They were like, 'You can’t turn your back,' so I was like, 'No worries,' and they said: 'You have to address him as your Royal Highness'. Then after that, you can call him Prince William and there’s lots of formalities that you need to kind of adhere to."
But when she came face to face with the 36-year-old, Emilia forgot all of the above, and things quickly went wrong.
"For whatever reason, maybe because I was so scared, I couldn’t manage to get out ‘Your Royal Highness’,” she continued "So it was kind of like 'ra… ra…', it was pretty much all I managed."
While Emilia's story is relatable for anyone who has come face-to-face with an A-lister, she believes that it may have cost her an invite to the Royal Wedding last month.
"I genuinely, sadly was not at the Royal Wedding, but I feel like I really should have been," she added. "I was there in spirit." Weren't we all, Emilia.
Stories like this make you realise that, despite the money, fame and confidence, celebrities can be just as awkward and shy as us common folk. Makes you feel better about your life, doesn't it?
