Jackie Chan's estranged daughter just got married, and awkwardly he was not invited
In May this year, Jackie Chan's youngest daughter, Etta Ng Chok Lam - who goes by ''Etta Ng' - claimed that she has been left homeless after her "homophobic parents" left her to fend for herself. She hasn't had many nice things to say about her estranged father, nor her mother in recent years - and so it is no surprise that Chan wasn't invited to her wedding.
Ng's mother, Elaine Ng, had an affair with Chan twenty years ago - an incident the actor later described as a "serious mistake". In a now-deleted video she released in April this year, Etta claimed that she and her girlfriend - social media influencer Andi Autumn - were homeless due to mistreatment from their parents.
"I’ve asked all my friends for help. I’ve asked all my family for help," Autumn, who is 30 years old, said. "Everyone just keeps sending us to the directions of shelters, where they know we will be split up."
"We’ve been homeless for a month due to homophobic parents," The 19-year-old Etta then added. "We pretty much slept under a bridge and other things."
"I don’t even understand. We’ve gone to the police, we’ve gone to the hospital, the food banks, LGBTQ community shelters and all of them just don’t give a s**t. Two people in love that share love are trying not to get split apart and they’re trying to f**k us over just because – I don’t understand it – I love her."
Many people responded without much sympathy for the couple, imploring them both to get jobs, pointing out that Chan had said that he chooses not to use his fortune to financially support his children, even if they did have a healthier relationship, and even criticising the large age gap between Ng and her Canadian girlfriend, who she met in her early teens.
In 2015, Ng made this statement about her father, who she has a tumultuous relationship with at best:
"He is my biological father but he is not in my life. He never existed in my life. I will never regard him as a father ... I am not angry with my father, and have never wished to see him. As long as I have my mother with me, I don't need my father."
It seems as if she has kept to her word on this, after she recently announced her wedding to Autumn on Instagram. The couple tied the knot in a ceremony in Toronto, before they returned back to Hong Kong.
"There is nothing greater than true love found," Etta wrote on Instagram, adding that "home is with the family that you can choose".
"Love is undoubtly [sic] stronger than blood. Everyone deserves love and not until I felt love can I be sure that understanding, connecting, attention and love in the face of hate can heal the most depraved of hearts. Love always wins. Always..."
Etta's relationship with her mother isn't much better either, after Elaine responded to claims of "abuse and cruelty" with a firm denial. Asian media outlet Coconut reported that Ng commented that the couple "should go find work".
"They shouldn’t film a clip telling others they are broke and who Etta’s father is," she said. "People all over the world work hard and don’t rely on someone else’s fame to get money."
Hopefully, the couple can now enjoy their new life together, and one day these fraught relationships can be repaired.
