Earlier this month, Jaden Smith surprised the crowds gathered to watch him perform with an unexpected statement. Smith, who was playing at Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles, spoke about rapper Tyler, The Creator - who was in the audience watching.

"I just wanna say Tyler, The Creator is the best friend in the world," he said to the crowd. "And I love him so f**king much, and I wanna tell you guys something."

"I wanna tell you, Tyler doesn’t wanna say, but Tyler is my motherf**king boyfriend. And he's been my motherf**king boyfriend my entire life.

"Tyler, The Creator is my mother f**king boyfriend, it's true!"

Video from the event showed Tyler's reaction, as he shook his head and laughed. Later on, Smith tweeted "Yup @tylerthecreator I Told Everyone You Can’t Deny It Now," but the tweet was deleted soon after - but not before he got a response.

While the comment, and the way it was said, could easily have been a joke - given the two men it involved, many believe that Jaden may be telling the truth. Jaden, known for his often-androgynous style of clothing, has been open about his sexuality, yet he hasn't seemed to confirm where exactly he lands on the spectrum. Tyler, meanwhile, is a little more complicated.

Tyler's earlier music was actually heavily criticised for its use of the homophobic slur "f**got," as well as numerous other offensive language that turned up on the album, Goblin. However, things seemed to have changed over the last few years. On his album Flower Boy, he alluded to his sexuality in a way that many fans have interpreted to be an admission that he wasn't straight.

Meanwhile, the comments he has made in public are often hard to read, given his tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. In one interview he said he would "100% would go gay for ’96 Leonardo DiCaprio," told the Rolling Stone that he was "gay as f**k", and even claimed he "tried to come out" but no one cared.

"It's still such a grey area with people, which is cool with me," Tyler said in a recent interview. "Even though I’m considered loud and out there, I’m private. Which is a weird dichotomy."

However, Jaden has not backed down from his original claim, despite Tyler's relative silence over the potential relationship. In an interview with Apple Music's Beats 1 Radio, he doubled down on his claim.

"I recently said that Tyler, the Creator is my boyfriend, and that's true," Smith said. "So, just so you know."

It's possible that, regardless of their own personal relationship statuses and sexuality, Jaden could still be making a joke out of it all. Smith has made many strange comments in the past, and this may be his way of poking fun at the speculation that surrounds Tyler's sexuality, and the sexuality of other celebrities who aren't so easily defined.
