Jay-Z speaks out at last about the Solange Knowles incident
There are innumerable scenarios that might occur in a lift that all have the potential to descend into fisticuffs.
A confined space is never the best place to badly fall out with someone; at the very least you've got to travel several floors together in tense, uneasy silence, at the worst, you might end up involved in a fracas with no escape route until that happy moment of respite upon which you can make your exit with all appropriate haste.
Such scenarios presumably take place every day in lifts all over the world without anyone other than the involved parties - and possibly some amused security guards watching the CCTV footage - knowing about it.
When three of the more recognisable faces on the planet are involved, though, it's a whole different story. In 2014, the world became whipped up into a veritable frenzy of intrigue and gossip after footage emerged purportedly showing a rather heated exchange involving Jay-Z, Beyonce and her sister, Solange.
Feverish speculation erupted almost immediately after the video emerged via TMZ, with numerous theories, each more wild and inventive than the last, attempting to unpick the circumstances that led to such a display.
The reality, though, is that, since Jay-Z, Beyonce and Solange have all declined to recount the details of what happened during that infamous lift ride, we still don't really know what happened to spark such fisticuffs.
Now, though, Jay-Z has finally broken his silence on the incident, after he spoke on a podcast for Rap Radar. Here's what he had to say;
"We have always had a great relationship. I fought my brothers and argued with my brothers my whole life. It just so happens, who we are, these things go into a different space, but it ain’t nothing.
"We had one disagreement ever. Before and after we've been cool.
"She's like my sister. I will protect her. That's my sister, not my sister-in-law. My sister. Period."
In the wake of the video's release, a representative issued a statement, advising that the family had "worked through" their problems, adding "Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred".
Of course, all families go through issues, often those issues make us stronger in the long run, and it certainly seems as though that is the case between Jay-Z and Solange.
How easy it is to forget that celebrities are real people, with their own set of problems and family feuds just like the rest of us. It is impossible to keep up the facade of glossy perfection without cease; at some point the effervescent, glitzy covers of magazines must be eschewed for reality, and more the fool the rest of us if we don't realize this.
