John Legend once tried to break up with Chrissy Teigen and she said 'no'
We all make mistakes sometimes. When we try to break up with the person we end up marrying, looking back on that mistake may seem comical. What could we possibly have been thinking? Why break up with such a wonderful person?
This is where John Legend and Chrissy Teigen were roughly 11 years ago. Exhausted from touring, Legend was in a bad mood where it seemed like he was ready to end the relationship for good. Teigen, a model and social media star, wasn't feeling any of that.
In a daring move, she simply rejected the breakup. That's right, folks, she just said 'no'. Now, in some contexts, this could be some crazy abusive behavior. But let's say that in this case, because it's Legend and Teigen, that John legend was just off one and needed to be brought back down to Earth.
Today, Teigen joked about the fake break-up on Twitter.
It all emerged from a recent interview with The Guardian, where John legend admitted:
"I was really stressed and busy. I was just like: 'I’d just be happier single right now.'"
A half-hour later, all the break-up talk was over and the relationship was mended, smoothed-over, perfected, good as new. And now, eleven years later, they're happily married, and an American star power couple.
Teigen went into even further detail on Twitter, describing her now-husband's mental state at the time:
"It wasn't a a typical breakup. He was on tour and his voice hurt and he was being a whiny face about everything and so yeah, I was like 'no'."
Indeed, he may have been a 'whiny face'. With a hoarse throat, overstressed, trying to break up with his girlfriend out of an overall sense of anxiety. Poor guy. And good for Teigen, for reading the signals and understanding that he wasn't for real. Sometimes, we all say things we don't mean. Their relationship was already close enough that she could tell he wasn't being ultimately serious.
In some alternative universe, John Legend awoke the next day in a panicked sweat, paranoid, wondering just what he had done. Then, they'd probably get back together asap, because impulsive break-ups can be just as painful as impulsive hook-ups.
What do you think? Are you glad that Legend and Teigen are still together, to dazzle us with these tales of their made-in-heaven romance, the one couple that never seems to go sour?
Teigen has taken her voice against the Trump administration frequently as of late, even getting blocked by the President herself for her barbs. Like many celebrities, she's recently found a political voice after decades of seemingly being OK with the state of American politics. One wonders if vocal citizenship shouldn't be conditional upon a bad President coming into power.
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, like Barack Obama and Michelle Obama themselves, have become a celebrity power couple. There is no longer any division between politics and celebrity, after all. So their politics and their relationship drama are intermingled on the public stage.
Now, one day, I'll have to actually listen to John Legend's music!
