Justin Bieber's nudes just got posted on Selena Gomez's Instagram account
Instagram has enabled our society to eschew reality for a particular brand of sun-soaked fiction that at once mollifies and alienates us.
After all, how many people can truly claim to live in the effervescent paradise that their Instagram page would suggest on a day to day basis? I don't know for sure, but my guess is that a scant few can actually claim paradise as their reality.
Meanwhile, ably abetted by the glossy corridors of Instagram, fame has become arguably the most coveted commodity in our society.
Fortunately for those whose wide-eyed imaginings of fame and all of its trappings holds such a magnetic pull, “celebrity” has never been more attainable. The airbrushed vistas of Instagram allow such popularity-hungry individuals to bask in the coruscating heat of fame, mollified by a never-ending stream of likes and #bodygoals comments.
Similarly, our fascination with celebrity has arguably never been greater. With the rise and rise of social media, fans are able to convince themselves that they are closer than ever before to the objects of their fascination, receiving what feels like minute by minute updates on their day. Whether such filtered exposure is a good or bad thing remains largely open to debate, but one thing is undeniable; celebrity as an institution holds significant influence over our lives; more, one ventures, than many would care to admit.
And so we move on, naturally, to the alleged hack of Selena Gomez's Instagram account, and the purported release of nude photographs of her former flame Justin Bieber.
Much comment and intrigue ensued, with regrettably few stopping to point out the monstrous invasion of privacy that the photos represented. It is thought that the images in question were those taken by a paparazzi in October 2015, reposted onto Gomez's Instagram along with a disparaging caption.
Thankfully, it appears that the photos were swiftly wiped clean of Selena's Instagram, leading to this rather brilliant post from a Twitter user.
While many seem to have found Bieber's exposure hilarious, the hack clearly represents a horrendous breach of privacy, and frankly those who would argue that celebrities make a deal with the devil when they become famous should remember that the rich and famous are still human, and having to deal with millions seeing naked images of you is hardly the same as a paparazzi shot of you leaving a restaurant.
This hack follows a slew of other regrettable instances of privacy invasion, with celebrities - perhaps most notably Jennifer Lawrence - seeing the release of their intimate photographs online.
Speaking to Access Hollywood back in 2015, Bieber said of the photographs of him. "Like, you should feel comfortable in your own space… especially that far away.”
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have dated on and off over the years, with many speculating that various songs from both artists pertained to their relationship.
