Writer, director and hockey jersey enthusiast Kevin Smith suffered a major health scare last February. After performing a stand-up comedy show in Glendale, California, he had a massive heart attack, and had to be rushed to the hospital. "The Doctor who saved my life told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (aka “the Widow-Maker”)," he tweeted. "If I hadn’t canceled show 2 to go to the hospital, I would’ve died tonight. But for now, I’m still above ground!"

We know Kevin best for playing Silent Bob in the "View Askewinverse" movies - Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He's also a comedian who pops up on talk shows, theaters and panels at comic book conventions to discuss everything geeky. If you're a fan of his, you know he's always cracked self-deprecating jokes about his weight - one of his Q&A documentaries was called Too Fat For Forty. However, the heart attack was a wake-up call.

The doctors told Kevin that the best he thing he can do himself is lose 50 pounds. So, he decided to change his eating habits, even thought he "hates vegetables." "I just assumed I'd be fat my whole life and I'd never see my high school weight again or any of those things," he told Entertainment Tonight in June. "But after the heart attack, suddenly I was like, all right, I never want to be back in that room again with someone going up my groin to get to my heart through my femoral artery, telling me that there is a 20 percent chance that I will live, and 80 percent chance I'll die."

Four months later, Kevin shared a photo of himself on Instagram, and fans were stunned. Thanks to his partnership with Weight Watchers, Penn Jillette's book Presto!, and a plant-based foods diet, he lost 43 pounds. "I FEEL f**king fantastic!" he wrote on Instagram. "It’ll take a few weeks, but I’m ready to lose that final 7 pounds!"

Well, now the Yoga Hosers director has finally made his goal. On Sunday, Kevin Smith stunned fans by posting a photo of his newly svelte figure. "6 months ago yesterday, I had a heart attack," he tweeted. "The Doctor told me to lose 50 pounds, but I have a problem doing what I’m told. So I lost 51 pounds instead." (Hey, he's never been one to follow the rules.) On Instagram, he wrote an inspiring message, thanking his fans for their support, following his brush with mortality.

"I started at 256 and now I weigh 205. This is the lightest I’ve been since high school! My hope now is I can slowly lose another 10 with #weightwatchers and get down to my birth weight of 195! But for now, I’m ecstatic to have reached this chunky milestone!

"I wanna thank #pennjillette for his book #presto, @raycronise for getting me started with his potato famine, and the good folks at #weightwatchers for their app-based program that made it easy to keep track of and control my eating! And I also wanna thank my kid @harleyquinnsmith - the little vegan astronaut who explored this meatless/milkless galaxy ahead of me, leading by example. Since I never wanted to see the inside of a hospital ever again, I simply copied the Kid.

"So this wasn’t a diet: these results came from a total lifestyle change of eating solely plant-based foods (which is tough because I hate vegetables). But mostly, I wanna thank all of you as well - for the kind and encouraging words along the way. Never underestimate the power of positive feedback: you folks telling me I looked better or healthier helped me stick with it. An encouraging word can really make a difference in someone’s life and your compliments kept me going!"

Congratulations to Kevin on the weight loss! The only downside is he'll have to buy new hockey jerseys in a size small.
