Kylie Jenner reveals the incident which motivated her to get lip injections

In the era of social media that we live in, it's difficult to not at least feel the pressure to conform to society's rather stringent conception of what is "beautiful". I mean, we can't help but compare ourselves to all of the actors, musicians and Instagram models that clutter up our social media feeds with their lithe limbs, unblemished skin and general retouched perfection...

Certainly, all of us reality-television fiends, or veritable Instagram junkies will be familiar with the youngest member of the Kardashian Klan's transformation; over the past few years Kylie Jenner has undergone a serious makeover, which began with her lips and ended up altering quite a bit more.

As such, Jenner can be viewed as a foil for our own times: we are all doing all we can to be more, more, more, whether that's more beautiful, more smart or more accomplished, in our age of mindless and incessant consumption, nothing is ever enough.

Ever since Kylie epically enhanced her lips, we have been obsessed with inflating our own to somewhat ridiculous proportions. I mean, the reality-television star-turned-entrepreneur really did tap into a booming market when she developed her eponymous lip kits, which always seem to be sold out.

And now, Kylie has spoken out about why she chose to enhance her lips in the first place, and it has a lot to do with not feeling "desirable" or "pretty" enough according to society's standards.

The 20-year-old revealed her reasons for getting lip fillers on Sunday's instalment of her very own reality programme on E! Life of Kylie. Speaking to her therapist, she explained that it can be traced back to a comment she received from a boy in her mid-teens...

"'I was 15 and I was insecure about my lips ... I [had] really small lips," Kylie said, elaborating that a boy she had kissed made a rather insensitive remark about the size of her lips: "It was like one of my first kisses and a guy was like, I didn’t think you would be a good kisser because you have such small lips.'" She added that she "took that really hard".

Continuing, she added, "just when a guy you like says that, I don’t know, it just really affected me - I just didn’t feel desirable or pretty."

Instead of resorting straight to surgery, Kylie tried to use makeup to compensate for her alleged "flaw": "I would overline my lips with lip liner just to create the illusion of bigger lips." However, she wasn't satisfied with that technique for long, as she says: "finally I was like, 'this lip liner isn’t doing it"'.

At the end of the segment, her therapist asked: "Isn't it amazing how people can just say a couple things and it's just like gets right in there?" Kylie simply replied, "it sticks with you", clearly speaking from a place of personal experience.
