Looking in from the outside, it at first appeared that Meghan Markle had the fairytale life many people dream of.

However, eight months after she married Prince Harry in a lavish Windsor ceremony, the fantasy seems to have shattered, with story after story of the former actress' struggle with royal life published.

Now, it has been alleged that the Duchess of Sussex has been forced off Instagram after internet trolls wrote "vile comments" that left her feeling "isolated and alone".

The Suits star shut down all of her social media accounts in January 2018, shortly after announcing her engagement to Harry.

But, it appears she wasn't completely willing to let go of the online world, with an insider claiming that she created a "secret" Instagram account to follow all of her friends.

However, her endeavour to stay in the social media sphere reportedly failed after the "vile stuff" people wrote about her on Instagram affected her mental health.

A source apparently told The Sun: "Since she shut down her public Instagram, she'd had a fake account to follow her friends. There was some really vile stuff written by social media trolls and obviously, she also saw the headlines about her.

"It really got to her and, in the end, she had to shut down that account just before Christmas, too, to protect her mental health. She felt very isolated and alone."

The insider also claimed that the pregnant 37-year-old "doesn't feel safe enough to go out on her own without protection."

The new claims come after reports that new royal is finding it "frustrating and stressful" having "no voice" and finds the constraints of royal life "debilitating".

It is said that Meghan is feeling "miserable" in her new role, while Harry is "racked with guilt" as he feels he has failed to protect her from negativity.

If the reports are true, the pair does a wonderful job of hiding their struggles. This week, it was revealed that the loved-up couple had sent out thank you cards to everyone who had taken the time to wish them a happy Christmas in December.

The front of the card shows the couple beaming on their royal tour, as Harry makes a speech in the rain and Meghan holds up an umbrella to keep him dry.

One Instagrammer going by the name of @loopycrown3 uploaded their card, writing: "Lovely reply from TRH the Duke and Duchess of Sussex thanking me for sending my Christmas and New year wishes."

On the other side, the card read: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, thank you for the very kind message you sent for Christmas. This was most thoughtful of you and greatly appreciated by Their Royal Highnesses who send their best wishes for Christmas, and for the New Year."

Let's hope Meghan and Harry find a way to keep smiling through all the negativity.
