This has been quite the week for celebrity transformations. First Christina Aguilera did a makeup-free photoshoot, looking unrecognizable with a bare face and freckles. Then Brie Larson showed off her insane back muscles after nine months of vigorous training to play Captain Marvel. Now comic actress Melissa McCarthy has pulled off her own incredible transformation.
What is going in Hollywood? Everything is topsy-turvy. Next thing we know, Vin Diesel will have long flowing hair, Tom Cruise will be seven feet tall, and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson will be slimmed down and puny.
We know Melissa McCarthy primarily from her iconic roles in Bridesmaids, Spy and Mike And Molly. Also, she's such a great Saturday Night Live host that she has her own recurring characters and signature impressions.
Who could forget her work last year, as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer? McCarthy broke out not just as a funny woman, but as a funny plus-sized woman.
In an industry full of stick-thin models, she embraced her identity, paving a way for body types beyond "anorexic." Now, thanks to adopting a healthier lifestyle, the actress has lost an incredible 75 pounds in one year.
And here's what she looks like now:Pretty amazing, right? If you're wondering how she did it, too bad. It's a secret. You'll never know! You're going to be overweight forever!
Just kidding. Actually, she did the Ketogenic Diet, which is pretty trendy right now. It involves consuming high fats, moderate protein, and low carbohydrates, so the body burns fat for energy instead of carbs. In addition, she exercises on a regular basis, to make sure the weight doesn't come back.
The main reason McCarthy dropped the weight was for a role, as literary forger and thief Lee Israel in the movie "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" As a biographical drama, this film is a bit of a departure for the comic actress. After all, her breakout role was in Bridesmaids, playing a character who got explosive diarrhea during a wedding dress fitting (as you do). But like other actors, she's serious about her craft and is willing to put in the work to totally transform into character.
Of course, part of McCarthy's motivation to shed the pounds was personal. We're all pretty sensitive about our physical appearance, only seeing flaws and imperfections when we look in the mirror. Now imagine how you'd feel seeing yourself blown up on the big screen all the time! And even though celebrities can afford dietitians and personal trainers, losing weight is still a struggle. But the results feel good. The actress says she's really happy with how she feels about herself. "I think I’m more confident than I’ve ever felt in my life," said McCarthy. "I always thought it was worth the fight. Now I know it is."
