Michelle Obama finally reveals the inauguration day gift she received from Melania Trump
It's been over a year since Donald Trump's inauguration, which saw the introduction of a new U.S. President to the world stage as the old one departed. In the 365 days since then, Trump has made the headlines time and time again, for reasons both serious and ridiculous, but the Obama family have still remained on the minds of many, even as they step away from the spotlight.
Earlier this month, the internet let out a collective 'awww' as Barack Obama shared a birthday message to his wife Michelle on his Instagram account. The photo of the couple was accompanied with the caption:
"You're not only my wife and the mother of my children, you're my best friend. I love your strength, your grace, and your determination. And I love you more each day. Happy Birthday, @MichelleObama"
But one thing that has followed Michelle around since the inauguration day, was one awkward moment between her and the new first lady, Melania Trump.
It is tradition for outgoing presidents to welcome their successors to the White House on the morning of the big day. On January 20, 2009, former President George W. Bush and wife Laura Bush hosted the Obamas and Bidens for coffee and tea in the Blue Room of the White House ahead of Obama's inauguration. It was no different in 2017, when the Obamas greeted the Trumps on the steps, with the moment caught on film.
One thing that was out of the ordinary, however, was the fact that Melania Trump surprised Michelle Obama by offering her a present on the inauguration, the contents of which has remained a mystery ever since. Now, in her first televised interview since leaving the White House, Michelle described exactly what happened in that moment.
Speaking to host Ellen DeGeneres, she revealed what was inside the Tiffany & Co. box she received, and why it all looked a bit awkward. It turned out she received a "lovely frame", but it was the confusion of the moment that caused her to react that way.
“Well, there’s all this protocol," she explained on The Ellen Show. "I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here. Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like okay.”
“What am I supposed to do with this gift? And everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box. And I’m thinking do we take the picture with?
“And then my husband saved the day – see he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out. No staff, no one. I was like what do you do with the box?”
Since leaving the White House, the Obamas have remained in the capital while their 16-year-old daughter Sasha finishes high school in Washington, while Malia is studying at Harvard University.
You can watch the full interview with the former first lady when airs on The Ellen Show later this week.
