Selena Gomez has been hospitalised in mental health facility after an 'emotional breakdown'

Selena Gomez just can't seem to catch a break, can she?

Whether the press are making dramatic assumptions about how she's reacting to the news of Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin's engagement - spoiler alert: it's none of our business - or they're reducing her charitable efforts to the aforementioned minutiae of her personal life, it's clear that the erstwhile Disney star no longer wants to engage with any of the narratives she's been unwittingly cast in.

Now, TMZ have reported that Gomez has entered a mental health facility after being hospitalised twice in two weeks - the second of which was described as an "emotional breakdown" by the publication.

According to TMZ, the first hospital visit took place during the last week of September, when the pop-singer was purportedly "despondent and emotional over an alarmingly low white blood cell count in the wake of her kidney transplant," leading a family member to take her to a hospital in Los Angeles.

Gomez was allegedly released from hospital after several days, but was again "re-admitted late last week because her low blood cell count persisted, and it threw [her] into a downward emotional spiral."

TMZ also reports that Gomez requested to leave the hospital, and experienced an "emotional breakdown" when she was prohibited from doing so. The 26-year-old is now said to be at a psychiatric facility on the East Coast, where she is receiving Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) - a treatment used for various mental health conditions.

A source has since told E! Entertainment: "Selena has been trying really hard recently to remain focused, and not let her health affect her. She has been actively writing new music, and moved to Orange County for a change of pace and a fresh breath of air. Ultimately, with all of her arising health issues, Selena started to feel super overwhelmed."

Earlier this year, Gomez completed a two-week treatment in New York for anxiety and depression. "She had a difficult year, especially towards the end, and she decided she wanted to spend some time focusing on herself," an insider told the outlet at the time. "It was all about wellness and her health."

Last month, the Wolves singer went on a social media hiatus. Taking to Instagram, she wrote:

"Mood lol (I was looking at myself in the mirror -like an idiot!) Update: taking a social media break. Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember - negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi."

This came weeks after Footwear News released an interview with Gomez where she spoke about the impact that internet trolls can have on her. "I feel like I’m one of those people [whose body confidence can be shaken by haters]. I actually am one of those people. I understand and I get what [my followers are] feeling and what they are afraid of."

We wish Selena a speedy recovery.
