Selena Gomez had a kidney transplant from her best friend Francia Raisa
What is the best thing a friend could do for you? Maybe be there by your side for a lifetime, no matter what? How about literally giving you one of their organs? We all watch TV shows about friends giving away kidneys to their loved ones in a time of need, but so rarely does such blatant heroism happen in real life.
Selena Gomez had been out of the spotlight for much of 2017, after news broke of her relationship with The Weeknd, so fans were wondering what was wrong. As it turns out, the famous singer has been sick with Lupus, and in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Her best friend, Francia Raisa, came forward and offered up her kidney as a donor.
The text of Selena's Instagram post reads as such:
"I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering.
"It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery.
"And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. For more information regarding Lupus please go to the Lupus Research Alliance website: www.lupusresearch.org/ -by grace through faith."
Here's the surgery's scar. I don't know much about Lupus, I've only encountered it second-hand through Dr. Gregory House, but I'm sure it's not easy. We wish Selena a good recovery! And we're glad she has friends that love her enough to give her a kidney. Being so young and giving up an organ for a friend is a truly selfless act.
The young starlet has transitioned pretty seamlessly from the Wizards of Waverly Place into pop music stardom. She's got the unfailing attention of both Justin Bieber and The Weeknd, two men who clearly see a lot of good in her. For a former child star, she's done exceptionally well for herself in music and show business alike.
Let's hope that every victim of Lupus can get a kidney if they need one. The donor registry can be a pretty harrowing and classist place, so it works best to have someone who can offer one. The survey, and its recovery, will be extensive. Let's hope Gomez can lay low for as long as she needs, and make a full return to health.
Shout out to Francia Raisa for her sacrifice!
