Shawn Mendes finally reveals that he and Hailey Baldwin were dating
While Ariana Grande said "thank u next" to Pete Davidson, Hailey Baldwin said "i do" to Justin Bieber. After a whirlwind romance, the couple got married in a secret ceremony last September. And now they spend their time not-so-secretly sauntering around New York City, basking in the flash of paparazzi cameras. Hailey even changed her Instagram handle to "Hailey Bieber," so you know she's super serial about this relationship.
But had a few things gone differently, the 22-year-old model could have been Mrs. Mendes. Last May, she attended the Met Gala with Shawn Mendes. I know, that might have flown under your radar. This was the same event where Rihanna dressed up like the Pope and Selena Gomez had a fake tan disaster. Lot of stuff going on. Anyway, the couple's appearance sparked relationship rumors, but they insisted they were just friends.
Well, now it turns they were a thing. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Shawn admitted that he and Hailey Baldwin were dating. However, he hesitates to call their 'thing' a relationship. "I don't even wanna put a title on it. I think it was more of a zone of limbo," he said. That might explain why Hailey deleted all her Instagram posts about Shawn, and unfollowed him, at the end of June.
One month after their date at the Met Gala, Hailey got engaged to Justin Bieber. "I get it, you know," said Shawn reflecting on how he felt. "I texted Hailey, 'Congratulations,' and I really am happy for them. She's still one of the f***ing coolest people ever—she's not just a beautiful person visually, but she's one of the most beautiful hearts I've ever met... I think I’m an idiot to not, you know... But you can’t control your heart."
It sounds like he still has feelings for her, doesn't it? Well, don't feel too bad for Shawn. In the interview, he revealed there's a new love in his life: Mary Jane. "I love weed," said Shawn. "I wouldn’t tweet that — not yet, at least — but it’s really good for me. When I’m home, I’ll smoke and then play guitar for seven hours." Seven hours! I hope his next album is one seven-hour song called "Take Me Back, Hailey."
Shawn also addressed the speculation about his sexuality. On social media, fans have created memes calling him closeted, and scrutinized his 'effeminate' body language. "In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone - like a girl - in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay," he said." Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me."
But now he's grown to accept himself: "Maybe I am a little more feminine," said Shawn. "But that’s the way it is. That’s why I am me.”
