Times Taylor Swift got outrageously slut-shamed in the news

Taylor Swift once described herself as a “national lightning rod for slut-shaming.” She wasn’t wrong. As the world famous singer-songwriter worked phenomenally hard to gain her success - becoming the first act to have three albums sell a million copies within one week in the United States and the first woman and fifth act overall to win Album of the Year twice - there was always one piece of Taylor Swift news that the press could never quite get over: Her dating life.

Although Taylor dated like any other young woman her age, any relationship, first date or brief liaison was aggressively thrust into the public eye. And the general public were not forgiving. Regularly named “a whore” or “slut”, everyone in the world had an opinion on who the chart topper was or wasn’t dating. There’s no denying Taylor has made her own mistakes when it comes to feminism, but every time someone slut-shamed her, they were undoing years of hard work for sexual equality, propping up the myth that men are allowed to do whatever they want, but women must remain chaste and behave themseleves. So, in the spirit of never using derogatory language about women ever again, we give you the times Taylor Swift got outrageously slut-shamed.

When her vagina was compared to a ham sandwich

Self-described “wife, mother, Christian” Jennifer Mayers sent Twitter into overdrive when she tweeted a photo of two ham sandwiches side-by-side, stating that the first - where the ham was spilling out of the roll - represented Swift’s vagina, while the second - where the ham was neatly inside the roll - showed her daughters’ vaginas. She promptly got ripped to pieces by social media users, one of whom tweeted: “So kids, the moral of this story is that if you work hard at your music career you can afford more ham on your roll” and another who posted: “@southern_mayers that's not how vaginas work, just fyi”.

When Abercrombie & Fitch made a degrading t-shirt

Abercrombie & Fitch found themselves in hot water in 2013 when they released a sweatshirt that read “# more boyfriends than t.s.” on the front. Regardless of the fact that the shirt barely made any sense - any Swift fan worth their name knew that she had been with two men over the course of the past two years - it was offensive and reduced a woman who’d garnered hit after to the number of relationships she had been in. Given that she is one of the most successful recording artists of the last two decades, was there no other Taylor Swift news they could put on their sweatshirt?

When she got together with Tom Hiddleston

It’s always big Taylor Swift news the star comes out with a new boyfriend so it was no surprise that the internet blew up when photos of Swift with actor Tom Hiddleston surfaced online weeks after her break-up with Calvin Harris. Before we knew it, the Shake It Off singer was trending on Twitter, with people around the world naming her a countless cruel names, simply for moving on with another partner, as we all do after a relationship. In fact, a study conducted by the University of Missouri revealed that 58 per cent of people get together with a new person within the first month after a break-up. Feeling kinda foolish now Taylor haters?

When every newspaper/magazine/website ever posted derogatory headlines

“Taylor Swift Sinks Her Teeth Into Harry Styles”, “Taylor Swift and Connor Kennedy Break-Up - The Country Player Crushes Another Heart!”, “Who’s on Taylor Swift’s boyfriend list? From Joe Alwyn to Tom”. There is probably not a newspaper, magazine or website in town that hasn’t at one point posted a disparaging headline or commented on the Are You Ready singer’s love life and it needs to stop.

When social media pages were started purely to slut-shame her

“Taylor Swift is a slut” “Taylor Slut Swift” and “@TaylorMcSlut” are only three of hundreds of social media accounts created simply to shame her as a “maneater”.

When she was victim-blamed

Swift won a symbolic $1 in a sexual assault trial where she counter-sued DJ David Mueller after he attempted to sue her when he was fired from his job for groping her. During the trial, the DJ’s attorneys attempted to claim that the singer was lying about the assault, but Swift stood strong, claiming: “I am not going to allow your client to make me feel like it is anyway my fault because it isn’t. I'm being blamed for the unfortunate events of his life that are a product of his decisions. Not mine.”

When she was compared to Miley Cyrus

When we compare two women, whether famous or otherwise, we only make the situation worse for everyone by assuming that they should be held up against one another and judged. This was the exact situation when reporter Ken Baker posted a picture of Miley Cyrus and Swift next to each other and wrote: “Miley is called a slut or bitch everyday. Has been with the same guy for more than three years and is engaged to him,” while the caption next to Taylor reads: “is called sweet, elegant, inspirational. Has been with more than 13 guys for the past three years!”

So, there you have it guys. There is no denying that Taylor Swift has her faults when it comes to feminism, but by slut-shaming her every other day we do nothing but continue the game of tearing each other down.
