Kevin Spacey comes out as gay amid allegations of sexual misconduct

Kevin Spacey has come out as gay amid of accusations of sexual misconduct by a young male actor. In an interview online, Anthony Rapp has recounted how Spacey invited the then 14-year-old actor into his Manhattan apartment in 1986 and proceeded to make inappropriate sexual advances towards him.

According the Rapp, Spacey had invited him to a party at his apartment and after he had found his way into the bedroom to watch TV alone, Spacey began to make sexual advances towards the then teenager. Rapp claims that the actor picked him up "like a groom picks up the bride" before lying on the bed and climbing on top of him.

“My memory was that I thought, Oh, everybody's gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home,” Rapp said.

Spacey appeared at the doorway drunk and didn't say anything to him, instead “He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don't, like, squirm away initially, because I'm like, 'What's going on?' And then he lays down on top of me.” “He was trying to seduce me,” Rapp said.

“I don't know if I would have used that language. But I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually.”

In light of Rapp's accusations, Spacey has issued an apology through his Twitter account in which he also came out as gay. It reads:

"I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I’m beyond horrified to hear his story.

I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago.

But if I did behave then as he describes, I own him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate, drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years."

On a more personal note, Spacey went on to say:

"This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been protective of my privacy.

As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life and I choose now to live as a gay man.

I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior."

Unsurprisingly, Twitter has reacted negatively to Spacey's statement, with many people saying that being drunk isn't an excuse for sexually assaulting a minor.

Rapp, who is now 46, has said the he decided to speak publicly about the abuse due to the allegations being aimed at Harvey Weinstein and his abuse of female actors in Hollywood.

Rapp said: "In 1986, these things weren't talked about very openly very much, except for maybe in an after-school-special kind of way. There's so much more openness about talking about these issues, and so many people are coming forward and sharing their stories. The oxygen in the room is there for us to really do something about it.”

There can be no doubt that the hush-hush culture of Hollywood is now being outed, with more and more allegations of sexual abuse seemingly being reported every day. Given the way things are going, don't be surprised to see many more household names being put in the firing line.
