7 classic movie moments where glasses have got in the way

Glasses hold a special place in the storied corridors of Hollywood.

Ok, so most of the really iconic Hollywood moments involving glasses happen to come in the form of sunglasses-wearing hotties (see Tom Cruise in Top Gun, or Audrey Hepburn's legendary turn in Breakfast at Tiffany's), but glasses play a crucial role in the fates of other characters, too.

One need only consider everyone's favourite boy wizard, Harry Potter, who's basically known for three things: having a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead, surviving the killing curse, and those instantly recognisable round glasses.

Having said that, the boy wizard did struggle with his glasses at times, and might have wished that he had some contact lenses handy, instead. Here, we've teamed up with Specsavers to bring you some famous movie characters who would probably concur.

1. Harry Potter and the stormy Quidditch match

The afore-mentioned Harry Potter found that his iconic round glasses got in the way somewhat during a particularly stormy Quidditch match, where they fogged up so much he could barely see where he was going. If only he'd had some contact lenses (and thank goodness for Hermione Granger).

2. Will in The Inbetweeners movie

When Will found himself with romantic interest Alison and they whipped off their clothes to go swimming together, it seemed like the geeky teen was finally finding love. The only problem was, when she took off his glasses, he lost all sense of direction and ended up stumbling upon Alison's Greek boyfriend. Classic.

3. Piggy, Lord of the Flies

Poor, poor Piggy. After a ruckus, Jack famously slapped Piggy, shattering one of the lenses in his glasses. Fans of Lord of the Flies will know, of course, that Piggy's glasses have many metaphorical meanings in the book and film.

4. Dennis Nedry, Jurassic Park

Ah, the ill-fated losing of one's glasses, followed by brutal dinosaur murder. Textbook.

5. Velma, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed

Velma literally drops her glasses and then says "I have got to consider contact lenses."

6. Mrs Norbury, Mean Girls

While trying to break up a fight, Mrs Norbury's glasses get knocked off and subsequently trodden on. No such trouble with contacts.

7. Stef, The Goonies

Stef dropped her glasses while traveling through a dark tunnel, only for Mikey to accidentally step on them. Contact lenses might've helped with that one, Stef!

Glasses are great, they help us see. But some moments clearly call for contact lenses, as these movie characters would surely attest. Maybe they should’ve gone to Specsavers, they’re great for people wanting to give contact lenses a try.
