While the majority of us like to believe that we are pretty intelligent, sometimes it just isn't the case. This undying thirst for intellectual recognition that exists within us all, and it is what drives us to compete in pub quizzes, play against each other on QuizUp and, of course, appear on TV quiz shows.

When you're safely tucked up on the comfort of your own sofa, you can't help but wail in laughter as contestants on these shows get questions wrong and go from potentially winning an eye-watering amount of cash, to being left with nothing apart from a red face and serious case of a deflated ego. But, it must be much different once you are on set and the camera is rolling.

While I've never been on such a show myself, I imagine the pressure is unbearable. Not only are you competing for cold, hard cash, but the eyes of millions of people are also upon you. The time-limit for your answer must seem shorter and, inevitably, the pressure eventually tells, with it being rare that someone will go on to claim the full jackpot available.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to one particular contestant on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. After strutting onto to stage and announcing the fact that he was a self-confessed "nerd", Brenton went on to brag about his intelligence, adding that he has just graduated from medical school.

Of course, the audience was gripped by a potential jackpot winner, but, unfortunately for him (and fortunately for them), the cocky contestant fell at the first hurdle. Check out the cringe-worthy footage below.

The question has been met with a deal of criticism, with people believing that it was misleading and awkwardly asked.

However, if this video proves anything at all, it's don't believe your own hype.
