The first few images of a young Tony Soprano in the new 'Sopranos' prequel have emerged. The show, which the movie is based on, may have ended all the way back in 2007, but it is still regarded as one of television's finest.

Taking on the legendary role of Tony Soprano is none other than Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James Gandolfini who originally played the part on HBO’s The Sopranos for six seasons. He tragically passed away in 2013, aged 51.

Production is still underway on the movie, entitled The Many Saints of Newark, however, Comingsoon.net (who first released the photos) has given us a little peek of what's to come.

The cast (which includes Alessandro Nivola, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, and Ray Liotta) and crew are currently filming in Brooklyn and Newark.

The screenplay is written by Sopranos creator David Chase and series writer Lawrence Konner, and is being directed by Alan Taylor, who also worked on the show.

The Many Saints of Newark will be set during the 1967 Newark riots which saw five days of violence, looting and destruction of property in the New Jersey city. The riots were sparked by the beating of a black man by white police.

Most of those involved in the fighting were African Americans and Italian American gangsters - 26 people ended up dying and over 700 people were injured.

In any case, The Many Saints of Newark should be an incredible film with a stellar cast and crew behind it. It is set to be released in September 2020.
