'Game of Thrones' unveil their brand-new whisky collection, and it looks awesome
This time next year, we'll have said goodbye to what is one of the biggest cultural phenomena this decade. While we had dragons, kingdoms and nudity before George R R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series got its HBO adaptation, Game of Thrones brought all of that into the mainstream, and although the later seasons haven't quite hit the heights of the first three seasons, it'll still go down as one of the 21 century's best television shows.
With the final season slated for 2019 after eight memorable years, it's going to be hard for fans to say goodbye to the show, but with this Game of Thrones-themed whisky collection, honorary citizens of Westeros can raise a class to the Starks, the Lannisters and the Targaryens, and say goodbye in the right way.
Take a look at this: Game of Thrones whisky, the kind of fine drinking you'd expect of Robert Baratheon or Tyrion Lannister, right there for your drinking pleasure. With eight bottles to represent the eight Houses of Westeros (and more likely, to represent the eight seasons of the HBO smash hit), you'll have enough booze to last you through a long, tough Westeros winter.
Interestingly enough, each bottle of whisky comes from a Scottish distillery that has a special connection to the house it represents, whether that be geographical (the Oban distillery and the Night's Watch both overlook a steep cliff), or symbolic (like the Targaryens, the Carhu distillery is synonymous for strong leadership).
As well as those, we've got the Royal Lochnagar for House Baratheon, Dalwhinnie for House Stark, Lagavulin for House Lannister, The Singleton of Glendullan for House Tully, Talisker for House Greyjoy, and Clynelish for House Tyrell, and as you can see, each bottle is adorned with the house crest (with the Night's Watch bottle in black).
There's also a White Walker bottle to represent Johnnie Walker, and it's got a really neat party trick. When this particular bottle is frozen, a temperature-sensitive graphic appears, that says: "Winter is here".
"Whiskies from Clynelish have endured long, Scottish winters, not dissimilar to the long periods endured by the Night’s Watch who have ventured north of the wall – so it was the perfect place to start when creating this unique whisky," said George Harper, blender and whisky specialist, while Jeff Peters, vice president, licensing & retail at HBO, had a fair bit to say as well.
"We knew there was fan appetite for a Game of Thrones whisky and once we saw the vision from Johnnie Walker for a way to collaborate we knew the idea was perfect and the time was now. From the beginning, they understood that we wanted to create something special, and they’ve accomplished that with White Walker by Johnnie Walker. We’re confident fans will enjoy sipping this delicious whisky as they wait for season eight and beyond."
Well, there you have it, folks! You won't be able to relive the shock of watching Sean Bean's character die back in season one or recreate the rush of watching Daenarys' dragons tear it up for the first time, but even as Game of Thrones creeps ever closer to its final episode, you'll always have these whiskies to help you remember this one-of-a-kind show.
