Homer Simpson, despite being a cartoon character, has one of the most instantly recognisable faces in the world.

You'd be hard pushed to find someone who, when presented with a picture of the titular character, was unable to put a name to the face. Indeed, it is a face that hasn't changed an awful lot over the nearly three decades that The Simpsons has run for.

The Simpsons is one of those shows that is almost universally liked, and a large part of that is down to the hapless Homer, unlucky in work and forever pushed towards breaking point by his rebellious son, Bart.

If you, like me, have always wondered what Homer would look like in real life, then you've certainly come to the right place, because thanks to artist Miguel Vasquez, we now have a fairly good idea. And it's terrifying.

Vasquez, who lives in Canada, is a 3D artist with a penchant for bringing cartoon characters to life. Before we get to Homer, here are some of his other spooky renditions.

As you might have already gathered, these are rather macabre imaginings of popular - and previously harmless looking - cartoon characters. So without further preamble, here's what Homer looks like. Brace yourselves.

Once more, with feeling

Maybe it's the bulging eyes, perhaps it's the sallow, yellow-tinged skin, possibly it's the empty, hungry look in Homer's gaze, but these images are sure to haunt me when I try to go to sleep tonight.

Feel like you've finally lost your innocence forever? Yeah, same.

People have been weighing in with their own opinions of the remarkable piece of work.

For his own part, this is exactly the type of reaction Vasquez is after.
