Comedies like Long Shot, Late Night and Men In Black: International fizzled at the box office, but perhaps they would have fared better on a streaming service. Today Netflix announced through its comedy Twitter handle that 30.87 million accounts watched Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler's movie Murder Mystery over the weekend. And that's despite earning a dismal 45% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. (Take that, you snobs!)

The streaming giant noted that this was "the biggest opening weekend ever for a Netflix Film"," attracting views from 13,374,914 accounts in the US and Canada, plus 17,494,949 more accounts worldwide. Sure, some of those views might have come from unemployed alcoholics who fell asleep in a puddle of vomit and tears after the first five minutes. But still, those record-breaking statistics are pretty impressive.

Murder Mystery was directed by Kyle Newacheck (Workaholics, Game Over Man!) and written by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, Independence Day: Resurgence). The film follows a New York City cop and his wife who go on a European vacation and get framed for the murder of an elderly billionaire. When the couple go on the run and scramble to solve the case, hilarity ensues. Or mild amusement. I don't know. Haven't seen it yet!

To put those Netflix numbers in perspective, Will Smith's 2017 action-fantasy movie Bright reportedly earned 11 million views in opening weekend, while 45 million accounts watched the Sandra Bullock thriller Bird Box during its first seven days. Sandler and Aniston previously teamed up for the 2011 theatrical comedy Just Go With It, which cost $80M to produce and grossed $214.9M worldwide ($103M domestic).

Netflix has a plethora of film projects in the works, and perhaps the most prestigious is Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. Based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses, the biographical crime film stars Robert De Niro as alleged mob hitman Frank Sheeran. The movie also stars Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa and Joe Pesci as Russell Bufalino. Visual effects artists are using innovative technology to de-age the legendary trio of stars to 30 years old.

The Irishman does not have a release date yet, and is expected to have a limited release in theaters like Netflix's 2018 Oscar-winner Roma. (Fingers crossed the Sandman picks up an Oscar nom for Murder Mystery! He was snubbed for Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, I tell ya! Snubbed!)
