In our post #MeToo world, you'd think that men would at least pay a little attention to what they say to and about women. While we're all for free speech, anything that reeks of sexism, misogyny or glamorises violence against women should never be considered acceptable.

Recently, a clip of Ryan Seacrest talking to Katy Perry on American Idol surfaced - only both parties were seemingly unaware that cameras were rolling. While the presenter's remarks were not overtly sexist in nature - and cannot be compared to the actions of the disgraced men in the entertainment industry who inspired the #MeToo and Times Up movements - it's evident that his remarks were dismissive to women writ large, and made Katy feel uncomfortable.

In one of the recent episodes of American Idol, Ryan Seacrest had an incredibly awkward interchange with judge and pop-star, Katy Perry, where he didn't seem to realise that they were live on television.

Seeming to ignore Katy telling him that they were on air, Ryan asserted that her mother was "pretty". Katy, who seemed rather taken aback by this remark, responded jokingly, saying that she hoped that they apple didn't fall far from the tree.

Clearly not realising that their conversation was being broadcast to millions, Ryan responded saying "you are too, but you're not a mum".

When Katy said "not yet", Ryan replied "wanna talk about it?" Her fellow judges clearly thought that the whole situation was uncomfortable, as Lionel Richie could be heard in the background saying "Don't start, don't start".

Ryan then finally realised that they were on air, and an awkward silence ensued. And confirming that no one knew that the cameras had been rolling the entire time, Katy asked the camera crew whether they, in fact, were live.

The people of the internet were incensed by the entire thing. "Katy Perry literally had to tell Ryan Seacrest that the cameras were rolling and he continues to hit on her, asks if she’s a mom and says 'you wanna talk about it??' after she says no. what’s going on i’m uncomfortable," one Twitter user wrote, while another corroborated: "Did #RyanSeacrest just ask @katyperry if she 'wanted to talk' about not having kids yet? Maybe I heard it wrong. Plus was he hitting on her mom? Very awkward and uncomfortable."

Many agreed that the whole thing was just "uncomfortable". "What was with that creepy #AmericanIdol moment with Ryan Seacrest just now? I am so uncomfortable," a third individual wrote, while another added: "That delay on @AmericanIdol when no one knew they were back so Ryan Seacrest asks Katy Perry if she's a mom and if she wants him to help with that made me feel so uncomfortable. Is that an appropriate question? I don't think so."

While Ryan Seacrest probably intended for his comments to be taken in jest, he really should have realised that his remarks were making Katy uncomfortable and desisted.
