Key 'Game of Thrones' character hints that they won't be returning for the final season
For fans of Game of Thrones, the difficulty of remembering character names, families, and histories is something we all know. It took me until around season three before I could remember most of the names of the characters, and then there would still be a character or two that pops up after a few seasons being absent that leaves you scratching your head in confusion.
This became less of a problem as the series went on, as the show's bloodthirst took the lives of many characters, whether they were loved or hated. Now that we've come to the final season, things are a lot simpler as the few characters left have ended their disparate stories and come together for the final confrontation between the warring forces.
The downside to this is that many characters we like don't make the final cut. While she may not be the most popular of the characters, it looks like Meera may not be making a return for the show's final season anyway. Ellie Kendrick, the 27-year-old actress who played the character, has expressed doubts that she will appear at all in season eight.
Although the production of the final series has already started, she told news.com.au that she isn't confident that she will return:
"I wait for the phone to ring and then I find out, but it hasn’t rung so I don’t know. I’ll find out whether I am or not at some point, but for now I haven’t been notified so I’m yet to discover.
"It was a sad day to say farewell to young Isaac [who plays Bran] — not so young now and also very tall, which means he was so difficult to put on the sled, which I actually did, although he’s a lot taller than me.
"It was really sad on a personal level, because we had a little gan which dwindled further and further as the seasons went on."
Meera helped Bran Stark on his quest to find the Three-Eyed Raven, dragging him around on a sled and keeping attackers at bay for months on end. Toiling in the frozen wilderness beyond the wall, fighting zombies, skeletons, losing her brother, she didn't exactly get a reward for her efforts. Bran dismissed her like she was nothing in her brief appearance in season seven, and now it looks like she won't get another scene.
Meera's character has been the focus of a detailed fan theory which suggested she may have a bigger role to play in the final series, wherein she could be unveiled as Jon Snow's unknowing secret twin sister (it actually makes sense, I promise). There have been hints towards this, so it may be something that will come up in the books, whenever they're released, while the show might have decided it already had too many family-related twists.
There is always the possibility that she could be lying to keep fans away from the theory, as Kit Harington repeatedly did after his character died in the season 5 finale, before returning to life in the next season. If she is lying, she's doing an impressive job of it from her comments here, though in all likelihood she is just being cut from a show which already has plenty to resolve in its final episodes.
