When Lady Gaga first blew up, she was famous for her outrageous outfits: a dress made out of raw beef, a jacket made out of Kermit The Frog dolls, an inflatable "star" dress with a dozen holographic spikes. Fans never knew what the quirky pop star would wear next.

However, Gaga's latest look might be her most surprising yet. In the trailer for the new remake of "A Star Is Born," she plays an insecure, struggling artist. Usually the Pokerface singer looks glamorous and confident. But in this role she's unrecognizable, wearing little to no makeup, looking more vulnerable than we've ever seen her before. Bradley Cooper also plays against type, as a grizzled country singer who falls in love with Gaga's character. As her career blows up, his career declines, and he struggles with a drinking problem.

"I don’t sing my own songs. I just don’t feel comfortable," Gaga tells Cooper in the trailer. "Almost every single person has told me they like the way I sounded but they didn’t like the way I look." Cooper replies, "I think you’re beautiful" and they fall in love. The movie also stars Dave Chappelle, Halsey, Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliott. The film will mark Cooper's directorial debut, and they shot a portion of it at the Coachella Music Festival to add a layer of authenticity.

This is actually the third remake of A Star Is Born. The original film came out in 1937, starring Janet Gaynor and Frederic March. In 1954, it was adapted into a musical starring Judy Garland and James Mason. In 1976, the movie was remade as a rock musical, with Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. The 2018 adaptation has a country rock spin, and will feature songs written by Lady Gaga and Lukas Nelson, the son of legendary singer Willie Nelson.

In a conversation with Robert De Niro at the Tribeca Film Festival, Cooper revealed that all the singing in the movie was done live, at Gaga's request. She told him she couldn't stand watching movies where the actor is obviously lip synching. The vocals in the trailer sound incredible, so clearly they made the right choice.

Last December, Cooper spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his vision for the remake:

"It all came down to this broken love story, and there’s no better way to express that than through singing because there’s nowhere to hide when you’re singing. Your whole body is electrified. That was the initial igniter of the passion for me...

"[We’re asking]: What happens when you’re 30 and the idea that ‘Maybe I’m not going to make it’ has crept into your artistic brain?” he says. “There’s no better way to express that than through singing because there’s nowhere to hide when you’re singing."

A Star Is Born is scheduled to be released on October 5, 2018. I hope Lady Gaga wears a meat dress to the premiere.
