By now, a lot of you will have seen Avengers: Infinity War. After all, it managed to gross over $678 million in the United States alone, and landed over $2bn in total - so that means a lot of butts made it to seats in April. Even the trailer broke records last year, as it managed to amass 230 million YouTube views in a single day, making it the most viewed trailer of all time.

Despite all the fans and theorists online trying to figure out exactly what they were in store for with the comic book blockbuster, they were in for a major shock back when they got to the end of the film. It should be said, just in case, that there are some major spoilers ahead.

You've been warned!

Well, in the climax of the film Infinity War, we saw the assembled heroes' plans to take down their ultimate villain Thanos completely fail. Right at the moment that it looked like they might just come away victorious, all their sacrifice proved fruitless, and the big bad of the Marvel universe achieved his goal.

But Thanos' plan wasn't just to become all-powerful and rule over the universe, but to balance things out a bit. Seeing as he's a psychopathic abusive alien who saw his own planet destroyed due to overpopulation, his ideas are a little... unconventional. In what was as big a shock to comic fans as it was to regular moviegoers, the mad titan snapped his fingers and wiped out half of all life in the blink of an eye.

Luckily, this all-time low of a cliffhanger, with our scattered heroes absolutely defeated after watching their allies crumble into dust, is not the end. Next year we've got another (as-of-yet untitled) Avengers movie on the way to wrap things up in what you would assume will be a happier ending than Infinity War's.

An ending as significant as this one had to be kept under wraps, and with the sheer amount of internet speculation and reporting focused on superhero movies these days, it's a miracle they kept it secret at all. But what none of us realised was that Mark Ruffalo gave the whole ending away a year before the movie came out.

Speaking to Good Morning America in July 2017, Ruffalo and Avengers co-star Don Cheadle spoke about the upcoming Marvel movies.

Trying not to give too much away, Ruffalo impulsively remarks "wait until you see this next one, half- everyone dies". Cheadle immediately freaks out and tries to control the situation, while Ruffalo has a mini-breakdown when he realises what he's done.

At the time, most of us just assumed that it was a big joke, based on the fact that Ruffalo is notoriously bad with letting spoilers slip. After all, this is the same man who accidentally left his Instagram Live broadcasting during the opening scenes of the Thor: Ragnarok premiere.

What really made this look more like a spoiler was both Cheadle's "dude!" reaction, and the fact that Ruffalo comes very close to saying "half" of them die.

One thing is for sure: Marvel are keeping a close eye on him in the build-up to Avengers 4.
