Bona fide heartthrob, Tom Hardy, can seemingly do no wrong. Whether he's stepping in to save abandoned puppies who have been left for dead, or embracing his embarrassing MySpace photos, it's evident that he's one of the more endearing celebrities out there. And you can't deny his acting chops either - his talent shines through in films such as Bronson and The Revenant, as well as in more commercial ventures, including Mad Max: Fury Road and The Dark Knight Rises.

And now, he's taking on the notorious American gangster, Al Capone, in Josh Trank's upcoming production, Fonzo.

After playing the notorious inmate, Charles Bronson, both Kray twins in Legend, and gang leader, Alfie Solomons in Peaky Blinders, it's safe to say that Tom Hardy has portrayed his fair share of mobsters - making him the ideal candidate for the role of Al Capone.

While news of his casting was announced back in 2016, we're only just seeing photos of Hardy on set. With production underway, the 40-year-old took to his personal Instagram account yesterday to share a photo of himself in costume.

Hardy posted a photo which shows him sitting down in what seems to be prison uniform, sporting a shaved head. Captioned,"Chasing Fonzo", Hardy appears to be in the wardrobe department, as he is surrounded by rails of clothing.

According to Variety, the biopic will tell the story of the infamous mobster's life from the point where his dementia set in - with flashbacks revealing his violent past, and dodgy dealings.

The official synopsis reads, "Once a ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Al Capone was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore."

"At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Al’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life."

The film, which has been in development since 2016, will be directed by Josh Trank - the man behind 2012's science fiction epic, Chronicle, and 2015's critically panned Fantastic Four reboot.

Fonzo is currently in pre-production, with filming due to start in early April. And while there is no official release date as of yet, hopefully the biopic will be on the big screen before too long.

As anyone interested in the mobster's life will know, this isn't the first time that Al Capone has been given a starring role in a Hollywood production - although the majority of portrayals focus on his years as a crime boss during the Prohibition years.

Legendary actor, and two-time Oscar winner, Robert De Niro, famously portrayed Capone in 1987's The Untouchables.

And while De Niro is a tough act to follow, I think we can all agree that Hardy is the natural next candidate to take on the man referred to as "Scarface".

In other news, Tom Hardy has revealed his true feelings towards Shia LaBeouf seven years after the actor knocked him out...
