Will Ferrell has a hilarious plot ready for 'Step Brothers' sequel
Some films are better without sequels, while it feels like others are made to have a second installment. Step Brothers definitely fits into the latter category. The film is one of the most legendary of Will Ferrell's illustrious career, and even rivals the likes of Anchorman and Elf for comedic value and quotability.
The movie centers around two grown-up men, Brennan Huff (Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C Reilly) who grow from being petty, arguing stepbrothers to best friends and eventually CEO's of Prestige worldwide. The development is emotional and often ridiculous, with the story including plenty of drum violation, frantic sleepwalking, and bizarre yacht destruction.
However, while fans of the movie have longed for a sequel to see how the brothers are doing for some time now, it didn't look like it was ever going to happen. One of the main stumbling blocks was that the plot was always going to be pretty difficult.
The original narrative took a look at the brothers' inability to fly away from their parental nest, with their stupid and childlike behaviour providing plenty of humour throughout the 92 minute running time. But when we last left the brothers, they were showing signs of becoming functional adults; so what can be expected from a sequel? Will they have dropped back into their childish behaviour? Or have they gone on to be massively successful and transformed into corporate men?
Well luckily for us, Ferrell has opened up about a potential premise for Step Brothers 2, and it sounds absolutely brilliant. Speaking to New York Daily News, Ferrell revealed an idea that he and director Adam McKay had recently been talking about.
"We talked about Step Brothers and then Adam and I got sidetracked with other things. We had a whole story where John and I follow our parents to live in a retirement community and try to convince them that we earned the right to retire as well."
Ferrell also revealed that while he would be up for a sequel, he believes that you need to be cautious when it comes to creating them.
"The sequel thing is so funny because, we decided obviously to go down the road with Anchorman, and we made what I thought was a great sequel, really funny."
"The entertainment industry and fans beg you, and beg you, and beg you for sequels and then you make it and you definitely have a fraction that’s like, ‘Well, not as good as the first one’. So I guess it’s a catch-22. It’s a nice catch-22, because people love the movies in the first place."
It's not the first time Ferrell has touched on the idea of there being a Step Brothers sequel. During an appearance on What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, he said the following:
"We talked a little bit about Step Brothers, but who knows... but at the same time, you like to create new things."
Let's hope that we do see the second installment of Step Brothers. It seems like one of those films whereby the writers could take it anywhere they want.
