Zac Efron undergoes an absolutely bizarre makeover for his new movie role

At just 30 years old, Zac Efron already has a fairly impressive filmography under his belt. He's played several musical roles (most notably Troy Bolton in High School Musical), has proven himself as a capable comedy actor (17 Again is a great film, don't argue with me), and is set to play a very serious part as the notorious murderer, Ted Bundy, in an upcoming biopic about his crimes.

However, that won't be the only film that Efron is working on this year.

As well as portraying a serial killer on-screen, the Hairspray actor has also been cast in a Harmony Korine film called The Beach Bum. And he looks completely unrecognizable.

For reference, here's what the star usually looks like:

As you can see, he's smart, he's suave, and - let's be honest here - he's pretty cute. He's proven to be a pretty nice guy off-screen, too. Basically, he's the type of man that, if you brought him home, your mom would be thrilled to meet.

So, anyway, when it was announced that Efron's latest role is in a stoner comedy, it was clear that the star would have to shake-up his usual charming look just a little bit. However, not many people expected him to look this different...

With his board shorts, bad bleach job, and truly terrible beard, the usual Hollywood hunk has been totally transformed into, well, a "beach bum". However, Efron will not be playing the titular character in the film. Instead, he has been cast as "Flicker", who meets the main bum - "Moondog" - while on his travels.

Unfortunately, not much else is known about the film yet. Korine has described it as "a comedy with Matthew McConaughey and Snoop Dogg, about somewhat depressive marijuana smokers, in the spirit of Cheech and Chong," but there's no mention of how exactly Efron's character fits into the mix.

Nevertheless, Efron's fans have already been ripping into him for this latest look and some of the comparisons were surprisingly on point.

"It's like George Michael fell asleep on a George Foreman grill," said one Twitter user.

"He looks like a midway transformation on an Animorphs cover," wrote another.

This look comes just after pictures from the Bundy biopic, which is titled, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, were also released. In these movie stills, Efron cuts a very different figure and could almost pass as a completely different person.

Between the creepy smile and the (somehow also creepy) sweater vest, Efron looks every bit the part.

In a recent interview, the actor said: "Ted Bundy is going to be a challenge. I think it's going to be different and it's going to be fun. I'm super stoked."

Meanwhile, the film's producer said that Efron was "perfect casting, as he can play both the depth and the charm that this guy had in equal measures, and which allowed him to manipulate these women in such a terrifying way."

Well, if the actor manages to pull off both these roles convincingly, it'll certainly be a testament to his skill. Hopefully, we'll be seeing him take on more diverse parts in the future. Though preferably without the awful hairstyle.
