While we all dream of being a little more adventurous when it comes to matters of the bedroom, we rarely have the opportunity, or enough free time to play out our deepest, darkest fantasies. Whether this is doing the dirty on the beach, and inevitably getting sand in places that sand should never be, or having sex in a dark, cramped airplane toilet, chances are that many of us haven't made it out of missionary position for quite some time.

For most people, the closest they've got to exhibitionism is doing the horizontal jog in a public place such as park. But once you've crossed that hurdle, where else is there to go but up? If joining the mile high club is on your bucket list, an experienced flight attendant has some good and bad news for you...

While I don't quite get why having sex in an airplane bathroom - 39,000 feet off the ground - is such a turn on, it's apparent that some believe it to be the pinnacle of all sexual rendezvouses. And if you're one of those people who find the thought of doing it in extremely tight and enclosed spaces appealing, you're in luck: according to air hostess, Jenna Leigh, it's easier to pull off than you may think.

Leigh is the author of Faking the O, a memoir about balancing her love life with being a single mother, and her career as a flight attendant. In it, she dishes the dirt on all the passengers who have struggled to get frisky mid-flight. And after working for 22 years with a major international carrier, it's safe to sat that Leigh has witnessed plenty of travellers attempting to join the so-called "mile high club", and apparently, a number of them succeeded.

"Let’s just say I’ve caught several couples in the lavatories over the years and many couples “going the extra mile” in their seats," she told the Huffington Post, before revealing that cabin crew tend to just "let it be".

"Honestly, I don’t think we have anything that specifically addresses it in our manuals. Fornication is frowned upon in the air if the seat belt sign is on, but ultimately it’s up to the discretion of the crew on board on how to deal with it."

As you could expect, Leigh has witnessed some pretty spectacular fails. "I’ve seen a whole lot of sexual encounters go wrong and for a variety of reasons," she stated. "That said, the No. 1 reason they fail or get caught in the act is because they’re too obvious about it. Couples try to be discreet, but it always backfires because they act so guilty and end up drawing more attention to themselves."

But as well as trying to be as casual as can be post-coitus, Leigh revealed that couples who successfully managed to do the dirty at 39,000 feet were also careful about their timing. "If you want to give yourself the best chance at joining the mile high club, take a red-eye flight where most passengers are likely to be asleep," she disclosed. "You’d be surprised how many people attempt (unsuccessfully, of course) to engage in sexual acts on full flights in the middle of the day."

"One time, I had a couple who began making out in their seats and thought it would somehow draw less attention to what they were doing if they covered themselves up with a blanket. Wrong! Well, that and the giggling certainly didn’t help, either. They drew so much attention to themselves ― it was like they wanted to get caught."

And it will come as a surprise to no-one that it's a bit of a logistical nightmare. "It’s about as easy as trying to do it in a phone booth with a toilet between your legs," Leigh exclaimed. "Let’s just say both people better be very experienced in yoga to get into that position."

Well, there you have it. Enjoy your future travels, folks.
