Heidi Montag was asked about the lack of diversity in 'The Hills' and people are blasting her response

In the 2000s, The Hills was the show to watch. Could it be completely ridiculous sometimes? Absolutely. Did we all still watch? Of course we did!

However, as fans look forward to the revival, named The Hills: New Beginnings, set to premiere in 2019, some major problems with the popular reality TV show have been called to attention: primarily, its lack of diversity.

The original show focused on a white and heteronormative cast, with not one single person of colour ever being featured as part of the main cast.

This issue prevails in the reboot; The Hills: New Beginnings will feature many of the same members of the original cast,  including Heidi Montag, Audrina Patridge, Stephanie Pratt, and Whitney Port, as well as some new additions, notably actress Mischa Barton.

However, when the lack of diversity was brought to Heidi Montag's attention, her response totally baffled many online.

In an interview designed to discuss the show's return, the main cast sat down with Vogue and Heidi was directly questioned on the topic. In response, she insisted that the MTV program was, in fact, diverse, because one cast member had darker hair.

The 32-year-old said: "We don't all look the same. I mean, Audrina has darker hair, I feel like Mischa has darker hair. We're California girls and we're a group of friends, and that just happens to be the group that came together. But, you know, that's just the way the show was."

She added: "But I have other very diverse friends that are not featured on the show."

Her response was blasted online, with hundreds of people disgusted that the former I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! star had used hair colour as a rebuttal.

One person named her "insultingly clueless", writing: "Talk about insultingly clueless. Why would they even put a show on like that."

Another slammed her answer, writing: "Imagine not being prepared to answer this question in 2019 when you’re rebooting a show that centers 4 thin, conventionally attractive white women," while a third person simply wrote that they were "dead" after hearing her comments.

Someone else decided to do a little detective work, putting Heidi's claim that she had "very diverse friends" outside of the show to the test.

"Lmao I spent the past five minutes going through Google Images searching for a picture of Heidi Montag where she is photographed standing next to a person of color and I couldn’t find a single picture!" they wrote.

However, many people on social media wrote that her response was exactly what they would expect. One person put: "But they KNEW that's what she'd say! You cannot tell me anyone interviewing Heidi Montag in 2019 actually believes they'll get intelligence or nuance."
