On Monday night, MTV rolled out the pink carpet for the annual VMAs, beckoning everyone from world-renowned artists such as Madonna and J-Lo, to teenagers you've never heard of (seriously, who are Lil Xan and Noah Cyrus?).

Some stand-out features from the evening didn't have much to do with music, though. Logic, for instance, the 28-year-old rapper who last year won the award for "Best Fight Against the System," took some time during his performance to send a message to Donald Trump; meanwhile, Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish bombed on stage while trying their best to attempt some comedy.

But as well as the political statements, the star-studded performances, and, of course, the awards themselves, one moment from the night that grabbed everyone's attention was a whispered exchange between Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande.

The two musicians, who have previously collaborated on tracks such as Bed and Bang Bang, each had their moment in the spotlight at the beginning of this week, with Minaj putting on an absolutely stunning performance for the crowd and Grande walking away with an award for her single No Tears Left To Cry.

However, while fans of the pair were obviously living for their achievements, they also seemed to be more interested in this sneaky moment:

The hush-hush conversation has been viewed almost 1.5million times on Twitter, and everyone is just dying to know what was said - especially given Minaj's initial reaction. But, without either of the two spilling the beans on what was said, we can only speculate on the conversation... and some people have some pretty wild suggestions.

Most people seemed to agree that the pair were probably talking about Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, which makes sense given that the Starships artist went on a rant about the celebrity couple the day before the awards ceremony.

"I put my blood sweat & tears in writing a dope album only for Travis Scott to have Kylie Jenner post a tour pass telling ppl to come see her & Stormi," Minaj wrote on Sunday. "Lol. Im actually laughing."

The musician then went on to allege that Spotify had penalised her by taking away a promotion "they had promised for the 1st cpl days" because she had played her album "10 mins early" on a radio show. "My music went up on Apple so I played it. I assumed it was on Spotify & Tidal at the same time. Spotify said that Apple tweeted fans advising #Queen was up a& therefore they had to teach me a lesson," she wrote.

She also added that her label "didn’t want to defend me for fear of Spotify trying to teach Ariana [Grande] a ‘lesson’ too!"

Spotify has denied these claims, and instead stated that they did support her release as agreed.

So, for all we know, Minaj and Grande were just sharing a bit of gossip about music rivals - but who's to say it couldn't have been about something else? Perhaps they were taking a dig at Cardi B after she threw shade at Minaj. Or maybe they were having a heart-to-heart about Grande's fiance, Pete Davidson. Or hey - here's a wild thought - perhaps they were just moaning about the canapes that were on offer at the event.

I guess we'll never know for sure.
