Being a celebrity in the 21st century means several things.

Firstly, it means riches and fame the like of which exist only in dreams and the bank accounts of hedge fund managers across the globe.

But it also means dealing with the incessant, luminous glare of the spotlight, contending with paparazzi, cruel trolls online and the demands on one's time and energy that come part and parcel with a life among the stars.

It is a sad fact of life that, despite the commendable strides forward we've made as a society with regards to body image and body positivity, many still harbour archaic values of what a physique 'should' look like, and the fashion industry is arguably the biggest exponent of these ideals.

That's why, when singer Bebe Rexha recently revealed that she was being rebuffed by designers ahead of the Grammys because she was "too big", the response was one of dismay, but perhaps not of surprise.

After all, other celebrities, like Ashley Graham, have also spoken out in the past about facing similar problems.

Rexha had revealed in an Instagram video how some designers she'd approached ahead of the Grammys had rebuffed her, saying;

"If a size 6/8 is 'too big' then I don't know what to tell you.

"I don't want to wear your [expletive] dresses, 'cause that's crazy."

"You're saying that all the women in the world that are size 8 and up are not beautiful and they cannot wear your dresses."

Speaking to E!'s Ryan Seacrest, Rexha spoke about the response to her video, and how she felt on the night;

"It’s been amazing. I didn’t expect it. I just did the video because I was really heartbroken and it bummed me.

“They said I was too big or fat and I love my body and I just want other girls to love their bodies.”

Per Fox News, she told Entertainment Tonight;

"I wanted to go for a princess look, but not only that, I had Karl Lagerfeld, Jeremy Scott, Moschino, Christian Siriano and Michael Costello all send me stuff and that was really awesome. I really didn't expect that, so my size 8 a-- is here on the red carpet."
