The 2019 Grammy Awards took place last night, and with the ceremony came the expected string of iconic moments, perceived slights and differences of opinion that seem to plague the Grammys each and every time.
This year, Lady Gaga made several headlines, due to her iconic moment dancing by herself, her relatable tweets about not wearing makeup and her important message on mental health, which she delivered during an acceptance speech.
With that being said, Ariana Grande made the news despite not attending the ceremony, after a spat with a producer of the show lead to her no show.
Many superstars were in attendance, though, and Drake was among them, taking home the award for best rap song for his hit God's Plan.
The hip-hop star used his moment on stage to seemingly throw some shade the way of the Grammys, though, and appeared to be cut short as a result. Per CNN, he said;
"I want to take this opportunity while I'm up here to just talk to all the kids that are watching this, aspiring to do music.
"All my peers that make music from their heart that do things pure and tell the truth, I wanna let you know we're playing in an opinion-based sport not a factual-based sport. So it's not the NBA where at the end of the year you're holding a trophy because you made the right decisions or won the games."
He continued;
"This is a business where sometimes it's up to a bunch of people who might not understand what a mixed race kid from Canada has to say or a fly Spanish girl from New York or anybody else, or a brother from Houston right there, my brother Travis [Scott]. But my point is you've already won if you have people singing your songs word for word, if you're a hero in your hometown. Look, if there's people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don't need this right here. I promise you, you already won."
The broadcast then cut to commercial before Drake had concluded his sentiments.
According to Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich, both Drake and Childish Gambino turned down offers to perform at the show. He told the New York Times;
"The fact of the matter is, we continue to have a problem in the hip-hop world.
"When they don't take home the big prize, the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad."
The Grammy Awards has since issued a statement saying that the cut off was unintentional, and that due to a pause in Drake's speech, producers assumed that he had finished, thus cutting to commercial.
