It has (somehow) been more than half a year since Floyd 'Money' Mayweather and Conor McGregor entered the ring together and took part in what has to be one of the most disappointing fights in boxing history. While the build-up to fight was nothing short of magnificent, the event itself was highly anticlimactic.

As plenty of people expected, experience told when it came down to the main event. Mayweather remained patient against an aggressive McGregor before picking him off in the 10th round. 'Money' won the fight by TKO and, despite the fact that it grossed an absolutely obscene of money, the majority of fans were left feeling slightly cheated by the whole ordeal.

In the aftermath, however, both men have taken time away from the world of sport. Mayweather announced his retirement and Conor McGregor has seemingly lost his mind at the amount of money he now has. Since the bout, the Crumlin-born fighter has reportedly landed himself in hot water with an Irish cartel, apparently had an affair with Rita Ora and has been in and out of court for driving offences.

But, among all the headlines relating to their out of ring antics, the possibility of a possible rematch has been constantly discussed. Rumours began circulating that Mayweather may enter the world of UFC, and it seems like this gossip is now dangerously close to becoming a reality.

Speaking on an MMA podcast at the start of the year, Dana White - the president of UFC - revealed that a potential re-match was on the cards.

"We’re talking to Floyd about doing a UFC deal. It's real. He was talking about [boxing] Conor McGregor. Was that real? Have you heard Floyd talk about many things that aren’t real? He usually tips his hand when he's in the media, and then that sh*t ends up happening.

"We're interested in doing something with Floyd. Everything is a realistic possibility. Mayweather vs. McGregor f*cking happened.

"Anything is possible."

Now, however, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive as, speaking to TMZ last night, Mayweather revealed that he has begun taking the steps towards getting a professional MMA license.

"Everything takes time. Eventually, we’re gonna apply for the license, and hopefully, we can fight," said Mayweather.

"Even if it takes 6 to 8 months – whatever it takes. We want to make sure that everything is done correctly, and everything is done the right way."

It's not the first time Mayweather has hinted at a possible venture in the world of UFC. Back in December last year, the undefeated boxer admitted that there had been contact made between him and the corporation.

"They just called me not too long ago and asked me to come back.

"I can come right back. If I wanted to, I can come right back to the UFC. I can go fight in the Octagon. I can do a three – or four-fight deal in the Octagon and make a billion dollars.

"Remember, I’m Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather."

So it looks like McGregor vs Mayweather II may be on the cards. Personally, why Mayweather would want to get in an Octagon with McGregor is beyond me. But hey, I guess money (and his sizeable ego) talks.
