NFL star scores touchdown just hours after losing his baby
You never know when death is going to strike. Just an hour ago, when I was driving to work, my dad called to tell me my grandma passed away. This didn't come as a huge surprise - she's 91 years old, and has been in and out of the hospital over the past few weeks. But it still sucks and it's a weird thing, to realize someone's just not going to be around anymore.
There are a lot of ways of dealing with death. One method is to jump back into your daily routine and lose yourself in your job. For example, I drove to the office to write articles (which are obviously pretty amazing - you're welcome!). But what if you have a job that's just slightly more exciting than writer - like professional football player?
On Sunday morning, San Francisco 49ers receiver Marquise Goodman got some horrible news. He and his wife, Morgan, lost their baby boy due to complications with the pregnancy. It was supposed to be the best day of their lives. Instead, it was the worst.
Marquise shared the tragic story on Instagram, posting a heartbreaking picture of him holding his infant son's hand.
"I just wanna thank those who’ve genuinely prayed for @morganakamomo & myself through out this pregnancy. Unfortunately we lost our baby boy due to some complications, and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4am.
Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan. The pain (physically, mentally, & emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable.
Please Pray for the Goodwin family."
Just hours later, the 49ers were set to play the New York Giants. Marquise shocked the world by playing the game, and he did something remarkable: scoring an 83 yard touchdown.
As he ran into the end zone, Marquise blew a kiss to the sky. Then he fell to his knees, and his teammates gathered around to support him, in an emotional moment. This is Goodwin's first year with the 49ers, and his first touchdown with his new team. It couldn't have come at a better time.
On Instagram, Marquise posted a video of the bittersweet touchdown, and it's gotten over 350,000 views. His fans have been flooding his page with messages of support, like this one from ncsusoldier71:
"There are no words that can help us understand theses types of situations. Just know that you are loved. Ensure your wife feels loved.
Remember that little guy is a piece of you forever. You and your wife are beautiful, loving and gracious people. Time will not heal this wound, but over time, you will learn to live with the loss.
Praying for you and your family. You’re always a champion."
It makes sense that Marquise's fans feel so affected - last September, he and Morgan announced the pregnancy on Instagram:
Thanks to Marquise, the 49ers got their first victory of the season, defeating the Giants 31-21. Nothing will make up for the loss of Marquise's child, but we're glad he was able to get a win.
