Family wins $11,000 from KFC after naming their baby after Colonel Sanders

What would you do for $11,000?

Would you buy tons of scratch cards at the convenience store, scraping at them feverishly in the hope that this is the one that gives you the financial boost you need the most? Would you sell some of your most prized possessions? How about potentially ruin your child's life by giving them a really unorthodox name?

You might balk at the idea, but that's 11 large that can go towards diapers, school fees or even a college fund if you want. So when one family counts their winnings while holding baby Harland, they'll probably have no regrets whatsoever.

All the way back in August, the internet collectively raised an eyebrow after KFC announced a deal wherein you could score yourself $11,000 if you took the decisive action of naming your child after their founder and mascot, Colonel Harland Sanders.

If your child was born on September 9 this year (on Sanders' 128th birthday) and you entered a competition before October 9, you were in with a chance of scoring $11,000 all for yourself, to buy several buckets' worth of fried chicken if you really wanted to, or buy hours of therapy for your kid after they get bullied for being named after the KFC guy.

Andrea Zahumensky, the chief marketing officer for KFC, says that this is so the name Harland stays among the more popular baby names in the United States. According to the Social Security Administration, Harland hasn't been in the top 1000 for baby boys since 1951, when it ranked 945th, but in 1922 it was as high as 497th, accounting for 156 total baby boys in America.

"We couldn’t just stand idly by," says Zahumensky of Harland's dwindling popularity as a baby name, and the wider chicken-loving public tended to agree - people actually went along with this bonkers idea of naming their baby Harland, and one family went home with the spoils.

Unfortunately, KFC didn't let us know how many people, so we don't know how many people have named their babies Harland for literally no reward. KFC posted a picture of little baby Harland Rose, who's made her parents somehow even happier that they were before.

North Carolina couple Anna Pilson and Decker Platt took KFC up on their bonkers offer with their eight-pound baby girl, and they were duly rewarded. "I’m as pleased as pumpkin punch to announce the winner of our Baby Harland Naming Contest and the Harland who will be ushering in an all-new generation of Harlands, little Harland Rose," said KFC on their Twitter account, complete with adorable baby photo of Harland Rose (who will just be called 'Harley').

Well, folks - there you have it! Congratulations to baby Harland, and I don't know about you, but if KFC are running a similar promotion next year on Colonel Sanders' 129th birthday, I am so trying to enter this time. Hopefully, I can the timing right.
