Guy goes viral for the hilarious mistake he made on the first day of his new job

On the first day of any new job, there's normally one thing going through your head: whatever you do, don't embarrass yourself.

Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out this way - in fact, for one young man who started a new job last year, a slip-up on his first day turned out to be the most hilariously awkward incident ever.

Jon Caña is a digital marketer in San Francisco who started a new job at a company called Essence in October. On his first day of work, he arrived to find a gift box from the company and a card, two things that made him feel incredibly welcome.

Later on in the day, he returned to his desk to find a bouquet of flowers. There was no note and his manager didn't know who they were from, so Jon assumed they were for him.

"I just assumed they were kind of part of this whole first day experience. I was like, 'Wow, this day just keeps getting better and better,'" he told Buzzfeed News.

In fact, the digital marketer was so moved by the whole occurrence, he decided to take a few photos with the flowers and put them up on social media.

Little did he know, the flowers were not for him...

A week ago - that's four months after he uploaded the photos of him and his flowers to Twitter - the office manager told him the bouquet was misplaced on his desk and actually meant for someone else. No one had the heart to tell him before.

The hysterical revelation had Jon in stitches, and he immediately turned back to Twitter to share the news with his followers.

"I FOUND OUT THESE FLOWERS WERE MISPLACED ON MY DESK AND SUPPOSED TO BE FOR SOMEONE GOING ON MATERNITY LEAVE BECAUSE THEY DONT GIVE FLOWERS TO NEW HIRES BUT THEY SAW ME TAKING PICS WITH THEM AND FELT TOO BAD TO TAKE THEM AWAY IM CAAAACKLING, [sic]" he wrote.

Needless to say, people on social media found the incident as funny as Jon did.

"What must life be like having so much confidence you staged a photo shoot on your first day at a new job?" joked one Twitter user.

Another added: "Haha, awww no wonder they didn’t have the heart to tell you... you look so pleased with the flowers proudly posing with them," while a third person wrote: "The fact you posed with the flowers in different positions is just cracking me up too."

Other people turned to the comment section to share similarly embarrassing incidents they had on their first day of work.

One person wrote: "I started a new job years ago and when I walked in on the first day there was a big bowl of chocolate candy on my desk. I was really happy about it until I found out it was for the whole office and was only on my desk because they didn't know where else to put it."

Another shared their story, putting: "One time I got roses, chocolate and a stuffed bear delivered to me on my birthday and was so excited that I had a 'secret admirer' until I read the card and saw they were actually for my neighbour from her ex-husband, trying to win her back."

So, what did we learn from all of this?

Number one: if flowers are placed on your desk on your first day at work, they may not be for you.

Number two: if you happen to stage a photo shoot with them before you find out the truth, roll with it and become a star online.
