Devastated drunk-driver wakes up from 10-year coma, only to find out it was all a lie

There are few things more tragic than losing a loved one. However, sometimes the pain can be made all the more unbearable when that loved one was taken as a result of drunk-driving. Why? Because it was a fatality that could have been easily prevented had the person behind the wheel not made the irresponsible and, quite frankly, selfish decision to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

For the many families who have been directly affected by the tragedies of drunk-driving, forgiving the person who was sat in the driving seat can be an impossible task. Hell, if the driver has an ounce of moral fiber, they'll struggle to forgive themselves.

But the point remains: the easiest way to prevent a needless death caused by drunk-driving is to simply not drive a vehicle over the legal limit. Regardless, drunk-driving is still a very real problem in the US, as hundreds of people every day think they can get away with it without any repercussions - and yet, every 50 minutes in America, somebody dies as a result of drunk-driving. That's more than 10,000 people a year.

In 2013, Tom Mabe decided to do the unthinkable in order to teach his close friend a very serious and potentially life-saving lesson. His friend, Ray, had essentially become an avid drunk-driver, but it was only when he was charged with his fifth DUI that Tom knew he had to step in and help him see the error of his ways. If he didn't do something soon, then who knows who would be paying the price?

That's why the message behind this video is so important and why it went viral soon after it was uploaded:

So this "prank" wasn't merely about having a laugh at Ray's expense, but about allowing him to see the value of his own life and the lives of innocent people whom his drinking habits could potentially affect. Ray needed reality to give him a huge slap round the face, and fortunately, Tom was happy to play the part of reality this fateful day.

So, after Tom watched Ray get absolutely wasted (as per usual), he then took him to a faux hospital room. A few hours later when Ray woke up, he found himself in a hospital bed, surrounded by medical equipment and hospital staff, who were really just actors in disguise. The first person Ray sees after waking up is the nurse, who informs her "patient" that the "doctor" will soon be in to check up on him.

When Ray meets the "doctor", he learns that his senseless and selfish drinking habits have cost him something he'll never be able to get back and that he has destroyed a huge part of his life:

"Some time ago you were out drinking and you decided to drive and there was an accident. And you've been here with us for some time. This accident took place back in 2013, it's now 2023. You've been in a coma for the past 10 years."

You can actually see the solemn heartbreak in Ray's eyes. They even prepared a fake TV news report set 10 years in the future, only serving to confuse Ray even further.

The most poignant moment in the video is that when Ray learns what had happened to him, he immediately asks, "Where's my daughter at?"

The fact that family is so dear to him is just another reason why his drink driving, which could drive him to an early grave, needs to be brought under control.

So watch the video above to see how Ray reacts to the "prank" and ask yourselves if it was justified, or whether his friends were taking advantage of his weakness and perhaps took it too far. You may want to feel sorry for Ray, but this was a tough lesson he needed to learn - because if Tom didn't step in, this could have been his reality.
